Pagani Huayra fails to make U.S. homologation
Pagani Huayra, 1280, 26.01.2011

New supercar from artisan automaker Horacio Pagani won't get a pass from the DOT

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) will not homologate the Pagani Huayra for the American market.

According to a report by Bloomberg, Pagani will not receive an exemption on grounds of financial hardship, as the specialty marque had hoped for, with regard to its lack of an airbag for the car.

Horacio Pagani, the artisan automaker and creator of Pagani, had hoped the exemption would be granted as other low-volume car makers such as Tesla and Lamborghini have received. According to the report, the small marque says developing an air bag system for the car would cost it €4 million ($5.7 million), something its low-volume and tight margins would not allow.

15 units a year of the Huayra were slated for the American market and the car had been built with sales in the United States in mind.

Said Horacio Pagani earlier this year when announcing the model would be sold there:

"This automobile is the result of five years of dedicated effort from the Pagani team and we see this [U.S. market entry] as an unprecedented opportunity to continue expanding our vision of the future for the supercar industry."

Pagani had hoped to build a dealer network in the U.S. to sell those 15 units a year. But the previous Pagani model, the Zonda, was not homologated for the United States either and was not sold there.

Who needs airbag in such a car? Bucket seats, anti-roll bar, 5-point seat belts. If you crash in Pagani it would be something over 200 km/h so you die anyway......

the DOT could really let Pagani sell their cars there because it is so low volume that those 15 customers would buy it with knowledge that DOT is not approving but allowing...anyway that is a collectors car and DOt could really look through fingers in this case :P

It is awsome how you can build a truck really high wich would kill a person if you T-bone them. But rollcaged, racing seat belts and seats can not be approved because it does not have an airbag

Dear Mr. Pagani, don?t despair. In the near future you can?t make money in the US anyway. It?s a bankrupt country...

Why don't Pagani just buy the Airbag or presafe safety technology from the Mercedes-Benz? Lets face the fact that most cars comes with an airbag. I still like the earlier Zonda S.

According to the latest data, the U.S. and Canada account for a third of the world's wealth, at a combined value of $38.2 trillion for the two countries. That's more than all of Europe put together (even though Europe has more than twice the population) and more than China and Japan combined. What's more, Northern America's wealth grew at a 10% last year, more than twice the rate of Europe (4.8%). Hate to break it to you, son, but the money is still in America.

Andres2007, I am surprise that you say that Canada & US is soo rich...you talk about combined wealth but when you look at the debt and unemployment in the US, that can be ignored? Yes, as you said only in America...stop living in denial, the US should see that it is only 15 cars, they need to open up more to the international markets to stimulate growth...$1 in the countries pocket is better than $1 in someone else's.

 Andres2007 Andres2007
Aw, who's in denial now? First, I'd like you to explain to me why exactly I should think that the U.S. government inflates data and European governments don't. But before you get all preachy with your anti-Americanism, I should tell you that these statistics are compiled by consulting groups which work with banks across the globe to assess these data. If they're reliable enough that the European editors of Wikipedia used them as a source for the "Economy of Europe" article when Europe actually was the wealthiest continent (in gross terms--because in per capita terms North America has always been FAR wealthier), then there is NO reason why it should lose any validity now that Europe is no longer the wealthiest continent, not even in gross terms and despite having 110% more people than US/CAN. So I'm afraid to tell you, it doesn't matter whether you like it or not (I'm sure you hate to live with this fact), but Northern America (as opposed to North America, which includes Mexico?although you could well include it and this remains true) remains by far the wealthiest region on the planet. And motorfan, you're confusing fiscal matters with private-wealth matters. The government can run billionaire surpluses and that doesn't make the populace any more affordable. Plus, you talk about debt, but the overwhelming majority of Western European countries are more indebted than the U.S. both per capita and as a percentage of GDP. You don't hear about the Netherlands being $14 trillion in the red because the Netherlands does NOT have a $14 trillion GDP. And yet its external debt is twice its GDP... which is like the U.S. having a $30 trillion debt hole.

Because they do the same thing as Ariel, they give you an invoice for the car parts/components and then add an assembly fee. They are registered as kit cars.
August 9, 2011 9:20 am

This is not a big deal, as a matter of fact in states like california where most of these would be sold they should buy their dealership, or partner up with a Mercedes dealer and import the car in two separate containers, in one the car, and in the other the engine, transmission, and wheels. The car would not be considered a motor vehicle. Then they would assemble it at the dealer and it would be classified as a kit car therefore exempt from emission regulations and taxations, also safety/DOT standards. If this can be done with R34 skylines and other JDM cars i'm sure it can be done with the Pagani.

Not for Americans, but for stupid little bits of legislation that rob people of the freedom of choice. Thanks for making a strong case for those that think Americans are ignorant and arrogant- the US's image really needed that...

vivilo, according to Gallup's latest poll, the U.S. enjoys the highest positive opinion around the globe amongst the world powers. Not only that, but a majority of people in Europe (the place where all hatred and arrogance and envy comes from, traditionally) view the U.S. positively. So the U.S. image doesn't need your pity.

vilivo, I agree people need freedom of choice. But I disagree that I need to make a case for Americans. Clearly, I'm not the one complaining here. The fact that Pagani is trying so hard to sell his cars in the US speaks for itself. I think people have a hard time understanding that it's part of our culture to love our country and think it's the greatest place to live. Get over it.

Yet there you are, trying to convince me... If you thought so highly of the US, instead of getting defensive, you would realize that replying to my stating that comments like that give the US a bad image, with a comment like that would be a bad idea. Nothing against the US, or any other country, and everywhere the people have stupid laws, not just the US. That being said- there are arrogant, ignorant people everywhere too, but most have the gumption to not go out and prove it to the world... Here's your sign...

One person doesn't live the same life as the rest of the population, nor does he share the same mindset. No country has clones and thorough equality. Americans are just people living on a mass of land with messed up foreign politics. What makes a country a great place to live is the natural characteristics and how easy it is to make money. If you have money it doesn't matter what country you live in, sure having money in Antarctica won't do you much good. Bangladesh for example, it's a relative shit hole, but i'm sure if you had a few million in the bank you'd live a good life. I mean if you have money the foreign politics, the freedoms the general public have, or how the rest of the world sees you doesn't matter, you buy your freedoms, and lets face it you don't interact with average people. You think the billionairs in Russia or China give a shit about the US's foreign politics and hate US billionairs because they are "American", nah they don't care, they have their own group where nationality doesn't matter, $ does, and as it stands most of the wealth is still in the US, the country may be in debt, but the rich individuals get more rich. And lets face it, if you are super wealthy the US is a great place to live. They have almost every type of natural environment, you want a pimp ski cabin you have it, you want a beach house on a tropical beach you have it, you want to live in a huge metropolitan city you have it, they have everything available, and the things that aren't readily available, money buys anyways. I'm sure if you really wanted a Pagani you would have one in as long as it takes a cargo plane to fly from Italy to US. Money buys everything guys, most of the rich people in the world are concentrated in one state, California, so you obviously want to hang with people on your own level so the US is a great place for the wealthy. Now if you are an average joe trying to make a living it SUCKS right now. For the average joe Europe is where you'd have a better life, mainly Germany/France. Free education/Healthcare, more vacation time, more evolved work culture where at the end of the day you have a personal life and aren't just a robot put on idle. To tell you the truth I live in Canada and i don't give a shit about American/Canadian politics, if it doesn't affect my life I don't care, I have enough of my own problems to worry about how canadian politics affects other people's lives and how the world views us as a nation because of that.

This might be the first post of yours that I have read and, for the most part (95%) I have completely agreed with you. I have to say, though, that America does not suck if you're the average, middle-class Joe. America sucks if you're among the unfortunate, lower class. If you're in the lower class, America does suck and Europe is a much better place to be in. If you're middle class, America is arguably a better place to live than Europe. Taxes are much lower (which means your disposable income is considerably higher than in Europe--per OECD statistics), the cost of living is MUCH lower, housing is way more affordable, and consumer products usually come first to North America. Provided you can afford healthcare insurance (if you're middle class you can), it's arguably the highest-quality healthcare in the world, with higher cancer survival rates than any country (per the Lancet Journal). That said, as long as the Toyota Camry is the best-selling car in America, I will always resent its middle class :D
August 11, 2011 6:44 am
 radmeister radmeister
Yeah middle class used to be good in the US, but right now the middle class is shrinking along with the economy. Unemployment is still at an uncomfortable level. You are right that taxes are lower, but not by much. The services you get are not on par with what you pay though in the US, especially right now with the massive budget cuts. In europe for the extra 5-10% you pay in taxes/year you get free healthcare and post secondary education, if you have a family and you want your kids to go to univ at one point that's when you realize that the extra 5-10% you pay is actually worth it. If you are a young and healthy bachelor then the US pay-as you go system is better. All depends on your circumstances and requirements for life. I think a lot of people from Europe make a common mistake and look at the US and compare it to their own country, they forget to look at a map and history. It has 2x the land mass of Europe(excluding Russia) and is only a few hundred years old. Their infrastructure costs are much higher than all of europe combined, their army is bigger than european armies combined(excluding russia). They had to play with their money very close to the edge. As a nation they make a shit load of GDP, but they also offer for the majority most of their 300 million people a very above standard lifestyle. They had to do this because they don't have excess $, they had to buy this image of being the best in order to attract population. And then BAM they crossed that edge, the economy crashed and now they are in trouble. Everyone blames them for the economy crashing, but loves it when they consume like crazy but as soon as they stop OMG FUCKING AMERICANS!, everyone cries about them sticking their noses in conflicts and starting "wars", but ask yourselves where would you be if they didn't stick their nose in WWI/ WWII. They are the necessary evil that makes the world go round, the system we have just doesn't work without them, and until we create a new global economic system there's nothing you can do. We need the "bad" guy or the "bully" to force us to be better, natural selection, the stronger will rule the weak, the weak will get stronger and eventually beat the bully and become the new bully. It's a circle, someone will always take their place. I rather have the US at the top over the Chinese, Russians or Indians....

Agreed on all points. I mean, I can't complain: I live in a middle class American home, my private university gives me all the financial aid I need and provides great health insurance, etc. but I'm not oblivious to one reality, which is that more than 15% of Americans live in third-world conditions. Countries with lower per-capita GDPs like Denmark or Sweden achieve much lower poverty rates because people are willing to make a common sacrifice for the betterment of all strata of society. Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting that Americans are any less altruistic or any more selfish than Europeans, but our politicians are so close-minded that they will deny a glass of water to the poor, if the Constitution doesn't require them to give it to them. Take Ron Paul, for instance. He's honest, he's clean, but he's a delusional old man who couldn't care less about society's problems. I don't get why he's so popular. And yes, I'd much rather have the EU and the U.S. at the top than China and/or Russia. Interventionist as they may be, the Western Powers have driven the world to more prosperity, democracy, and technological achievement than any other region on Earth could have. And that's why I advocate friendly EU-U.S. relations. Together, we're far, far beyond China's reach.
