BMW floating the idea of having a V6 instead of an inline six-cylinder unit for the next-generation M3

BMW Blog has the scoop on what will lie beneath the hood of the next-generation M3 model - which will follow the 2012 3-Series slated for launch later this year.

A 450 PS (331 kW / 444 bhp) tri-turbo 3.2 liter six-cylinder? Well, we already know of the tri-turbo 3.0 liter diesel unit.

According to a BMW Blog source, the triple-turbo engine being developed is the front-runner for the next M3. Undecided, apparently, is the issue of whether it will be an inline-six, as BMW has traditionally built, or a new V6 configuration that will save space under the bonnet.

Here's what BMW USA chief Ludwig Willisch told BMW Blog of a possible V6 back in 2009:

"[Related to new M3] The question is will it be a V-6 or an inline six. And we simply are looking at the best solution for the car. The V-6 has the possibility to move the engine further downwards, towards the bulkhead, whereas the inline six is lighter. But as it looks right now, in order to have the right power output, we have to do a lot of work on the test beds to see where we can go. Engines don't necessarily have to be more powerful for the next car. As long as you have lighter weight, you have better performance. You still need the performance our customers expect. If you have a lighter car, you need the power somewhere in the neighborhood of the current M3."

In my imagination, it's hard to create an inline-engine with a triturbocharger construction. But I will be corrected if neccesary

It would be MUCH easier to put Tri-Turbo on an inline 6 than a V6. Creating the headers for a V6 with 3 turbos would just be overly complicated. As Microice said though a V6 would be easier to fit in there in order to accommodate the front trans-axle for the AWD. BUT then again they could mount the I6 transversely and slightly widen the front, that way the weight would be closer to the bulkhead...Who knows.

rademeister I am disappointed....you're telling that they should put the inline engine transversaly...and it would be better...well let me tell you that than it is almost impossible to build a proper RWD drive shaft from engine to the rear wheels...and still turbos would then need to be in the front and as so the pipes would be longer and heat generated would be as obstacle to the cooling of the engine...anyway BMW will never do that...that typ of engine is out of modern cars...only Volvo still practice it and GM with Chevy Epica :D

What the heck are you talking about? Volvo does not do RWD. They do however mount the engine transverse, just like everyone else these days. What BMW does, inline engines with longitudinal mounting & RWD, that is old school. The former is better use of space, and the latter is better for for a drivers car.

I'm saying it would have to be transverse for the AWD variant, obviously you want straight for RWD. Even the V6 would have to sit in front of the front wheels in order for it to be AWD or it would have to be mounted transversely. No matter how you put it if you want AWD the flywheel has to sit as close as possible to being inline with the front wheels. If they stick the I6 straight then i think the front of the car would have to be really long nosed, might work in the Z4 but not 3 series. To tell you the truth they will most likely cut off 2 cylinders from the M3 engine, which is the M5 engine with 2 cylinders cut off and use a bi-turbo setup. I mean AUDI did it with their S models, i think bmw will follow suit. 3 Turbos is a little bit over the top for a v6, The old RS4s were a 2.7L V6 with bi-turbo and pushed out 380hp, with some fine tuning they were driving around with 450hp+. And this was in 2000-2001. BMW can get over 450hp out of a 3.2L V6 with BI-Turbo...Which is not the same as TWIN-Turbo.

i don't think the I6 will ever fit in transversely even if its for AWD model. That engine was designed to be mounted longitudinally, plus, the width will never fit. So my best guess would still be a new V6 tri-turbo, I6(longitudinal) with compact tri-turbo, or......good god, I4 tri-turbo M3!!!

@xLumino yes you're right, the 6-cylinder engine with 3 turbos is much easier to develope if the configuration is V6 than R6, but if you have one turbo powered by electric engine than it is similar concept to Biturbo engine! anyway great engine will be this 3-turbo six cylinder, so hardly we are waiting :D

With BMW adding an xDrive M5 variant, I wouldn't be surprised with a V6 M3 to maybe accomodate the xDrive machinery at the front...

I have never been more disappointed to hear the words V6 and M3. A turbo? Fine it's more efficient and more powerful I'm over that but good god no V6.

A tri turbo V6? I am dissapoint. Why not fourty seven? Why can't it be NA V8?!

if they make the m3 the only v6 car in their line up expect the parts to cost very high, i dnt think they'll do it

3 turbochargers! Stick another in, then I will buy it.

Well.. might as well throw a kitchen sink in! Just joking. I think it would be an interestingly efficient and cost-effective idea, but I will reserve my judgement when that time comes.

Not really cost effective, 3 turbos even small ones are about 4500$. My little GT1752 was about 1300$....

If you can drive the car 200-300KM wll the turbo last as long??? Specially in hot climate!!!
