More BMW name games - M3 to become M4?
3-Series sport coupes may be re-badged as 4-Series but what about the iconic M3?
BMW has lots of ideas for revising their naming scheme, but none of them are without their drawbacks.
According to a report by Car & Driver, BMW is now considering re-naming all sport coupe variants of the next-generation 3-Series into the 4-Series, as the brand already does with the 6-Series coupe, which is based on the 5-Series architecture, and the X6 SUV Coupe, based on the X5.
Sounds like a good idea but what about the iconic M3?
What are they going to do, call the M3 sedan an M3 while re-naming the M3 Coupe the M4? Not likely.
The report states that the M3 will remain the same. So, there will be a 4-Series coupe but the equivalent M-badged variant will be the M3?
BMW will likely have to come up with something that makes more sense.

To me M4 sounds better than M3. It is just a matter of getting used to it. It will be a lot easier. The Sedan will be an odd number, the Coupe an even number.

So we will still retain the M3 name, it will not be gone forever. BMW M4. Sounds nice.

they could make the "M3" the M4, and make the 1 series M into the 'real M3'

How about they everything as it is, and stop this pointless issue.

this is stupid to change historical name to new...
it's like vw done with Jetta, call it Bora and then Jetta again, i'm sure bmw will do the same...

new 1 series is FWD. current 1 series becomes the new 2 series. Current 1 series M becomes the new M3, the old M3 becomes the M4.

BMW marketing ppl are just the dumbest in naming their cars. look at names like "z4 sdrive35is". go back to your historical roots and be pure and simple. 3 series is just the chassis/platform size. Like the E30 back in the 80's, you can have all your coupe, sedan, touring, convertible in a 3 _ _ or M3. Pure and simple.

i'm sorry. here's a even longer name: "BMW Z4 sDrive35is Roadster Mille Miglia Limited Edition"

In order for it to be named the M4 coupe it needs to distance itself from the M3 sedan.

well, BMW's gonna lose all customers for Chinese backgound if they make it M4/4series, which pretty much means death...
