U.S.-spec Honda Civic gets hammered by Consumer Reports
2012 Honda Civic (US spec) - 20.4.2011

American consumer magazine downgrades the 2012 Civic's rating after the previous model had long been a favorite

The U.S.-spec Honda Civic has long been a favorite of the preeminent American consumer magazine, Consumer Reports.

But now the magazine says the new 2012 Honda Civic is not up to par with the competition. The car's rating has suffered a precipitous drop over the previous model. The new 2011 Civic LX sedan scored 61 points overall, compared with 78 points for last year's model. The Civic had made Consumer Reports' Top Picks list for five of the last ten years.

Honda, like all Japanese automakers, is suffering from a strong Yen and the effects of the earthquake and tsunami from last march which have plagued production in the auto industry there. The automaker tried to cut costs in the development of the new Civic, a move which resulted in less-refined elements of the new car which likely did not impress test staff at Consumer Reports.

I hate the new Civics they remind me of Dust Buster vacuum cleaners. They look cheap, they now look like how American cars looked back in the 90's a step behind the competition.

MotorWeek seems to love it. Cuntsumer reports can suck it.

My wife is from Aliston, ON where they build the Civic, so with that said, she was a hard core Civic fan... until recently. The new Civics are just plain cheap and have fallen quite far behind the competition. It's funny to watch her become so disappointed in Honda each time they release a new generation of Civic. It's like me and new BMW's! LOL!

They do get worse with each new one don't they? The 5th generation was the last good one...after that it just got cheaper and cheaper...and now this recycled looking thing.

Well I have always been a fan of the Civic. I especially like the previous generation and the EG Ferio one. Truely outstanding !

Cutting costs appeared to make sense when the Civic and Jetta were on the drawing board; but Ford, Hyundai, and Chevrolet have raised the bar in the quality of interior materials. Consequently, these previous favorites are out of step with market tastes and values.

Quite possibly true... I hope that doesn't apply to the EURO Civic. Has to satisfy those "Euro-snobs", you know! (...like me!) http://goo.gl/xfU2E

the honda civic and toyota corolla are falling behind the competition. I didn't like it when honda switched the 1.8 engine from a dohc to sohc. Dohc engines are more efficient.
