Mercedes SL65 AMG hits the chopping block
Mercedes SL 65 AMG

Sun preparing to set on the V12?

Mercedes has quietly dropped the SL65 AMG.

The move follows the death of the SL600 and is part of the lead up for the redesigned model. For nostalgia's sake, the twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12 engine produced 612 PS (450 kW / 604 hp) and 1,000 Nm (737 lb-ft) of torque.

It remains unclear if Mercedes will eventually end V12 production altogether, but previous reports have suggested that possibility.  It's just speculation at this point, but increasing standards for fuel-efficiency and CO2 emissions are cause for concern.

It's about time, that this crazy horse power race will end finally. Whoever needs 600+ hp in it's daily activities like going to the grocery shop or whatever.

yeah any of the 65 AMG cars could never put the power down to the rear wheels and didnt make sense to have and wasnt able to use it. The car itself would of been better with all wheel drive like any of the higher power output cars are

True, they should make cars lighter too. The SLS AMG has 563hp vs 604hp of the SL65 AMG, but its quicker and more agile because its lighter.

Oh please, like anyone who bought a V12 convertible AMG Mercedes bought them as grocery getters. It's meant to be one of those long-distance GTs with the power and torque you could ever need for cross-continental journeys and all that kind of stuff, like a DB9 or a Bentley Conti GT. The whole power race thing just comes from the arms race the German "Grosser Drei" have with each other. If there were more buyers for this car (for I assume low sales is what really killed the 65 off), then BMW would've made a hotter M6 or a new 8-Series with 620bhp, and Audi would've made something similar too.

"It's meant to be one of those long-distance GTs with the power and torque you could ever need for cross-continental journeys and all that kind of stuff" @Mikeado, isn't the 518hp SL63 or even the standard V8 SL capable of doing that too?

Hence why the more expensive SL65 is being axed due to low sales.

My guess is as good as yours, but I don't think Mercedes will abandon v12 completely, perhaps they are making a completely new twin turbo with cylinder shut-off technology like the new V8 in the upcoming slk55. AMG does power the Pagani, to what extent that remains exclusive is beyond me.

Dont they have an agreement with AM to sell V12s to them in the future?

I live in Paradise Valley, AZ and you see alot of these SL65 AMG driving around with a elderly person driving in the slow lane. It makes me wonder if they know what a AMG upgrade is or they are so wealthy that the price dictates if the car is good or not

I always wondered why they bothered with the SL600 when the SL63 has almost identical performance. And the SL65 has more horsepower then you'll ever use in an SL, the SL never needed super car horsepower. I think the SL550 is perfect for a cruiser and if you'd like a sports car the upgrade to the SL63. I don't think Mercedes will abandon the V12 they're going want to continue to compete with BMW's 760 and attempt to keep Maybach in compition with Rolls Royce. The SL really doesn't need a V12.

Yes Merc will discontinue the SL600 permanently, but the SL65 will be back in the next gen 2012 SL. The SL600 simply doesn't sell in high enough numbers to justify it.

are they going to end all the v12s models i love the s600 and s65 they need to revamp the v12 to dohc again with direct injection or better yet make a diesel version like vw does to improve on efficency

Instead of adding more horsepower, why not shave off a few hundred pounds from that 4,555 lb curb weight. I'm surprised that a full-size Mercedes S550 is 100 lb lighter at 4,455 lb!

I think they will keep the V12...we're forgetting that Zonda uses their V12 engines

The SL range should be alot lighter than the current one. Pity about the V12's. What a dream to drive though. Maybe Merc is planning a new Generation V12. Let's hope so!!!

Such a divine vehicle.. They've certainly got solid plans up their sleeves, whatever the case may be. I could never get enough of the interior of this model -let alone the massive power.

Magnificent, car, so sad to see it go. Hope they bring the interior of SL65 and put it in the SL63. Loved the cross stitching on the seats.
