VW Motorsport chief Wolfgang Duerheimer says he could see one of the VW Group brands entering the sport in 2018

Volkswagen is a very ambitious automaker...and so why not include an entry into Formula One racing in its 'world domination' plans.

VW Motorsport chief Wolfgang Duerheimer told German car magazine Auto, Motor und Sport that he "could imagine involvement in Formula One in 2018, when the company is at the forefront of the industry."

That is the year that VW plans to sell over 10 million vehicles a year and become the world's largest automaker.

Duerheimer didn't specify which brand it would be or whether the F1 team would fly the VW-badge flag.

"We have enough brands that could do that," he said.

A Lamborghini F1? That would be something to see.

They just keep beating this dead horse. I have an idea...... lets talk about it when we actually see an open wheel platform that conforms to F1 regs on track testing. This thing is no where close.

No change from the last time we heard news of a VW brand in F1 eons ago. Seems no news IS news. Which V-dub brand will benefit the most from F1 is the answer and it can only be VW or Audi coz of the turbo engines.

if VW is serious about this, then this could work. Looking at Audi's success in LeMans(i know it's far from 'the same') , they can be some srious competitors in F1. Hope VW will actually do something, to make it heppen.

1.6ltr turbo for F1 is just not F1, VW would love this as they have a sweatshop full of 1.6ltr engines

VW's corporate confidence is understandably higher considering their compelling product portfolio. However, if their 2018 ultra ambitious business plan doesn't go to plan, what would then become of their F1 plans?! For the sake of their global reputation, they better make sure they deliver or Toyota would have the last laugh!
