Details emerge on BMW 6-Series four-door coupe
BMW Concept Gran Coupe 23.04.2010

6-Series Gran Coupe will debut sometime in 2012

Our colleagues over at Motor Trend have the scoop on the upcoming 6-Series four-door Gran Coupe.

Originally debuted as the Gran Coupe Concept last year, the 6-Series-based model has been slated for production and will debut sometime in 2012.

The 6-Series Gran Coupe will share the same wheelbase as the 5-Series at 116.8 inches/2967 mm, as opposed to the shorter 6-Series wheelbase length. But the car will be about 3.5 inches/ 89 mm shorter than the 5-Series at 54 inches/1372 mm, and wider too, at 74.9 inches/1902 mm. A lower and wider stance like the 6-Series coupe/cabrio models. Total length will outdo its arch-rival, the Mercedes-Benz CLS, by 2 inches/51 mm and come in at 197.1 inches/5006 mm.

The four-door coupe will feature frameless door windows but the car will have a B-pillar.

To save weight, the doors and bonnet are made of aluminum while special plastics are used for the front fenders and boot lid.

The 6-Series Gran Coupe will also be offered with the xDrive all-wheel-drive system. Engines expected include those already available in the 6-Series.

Why have a lower roof? So you cant fit people in the back?

@zyzyphe, its actually lower than the current CLS. The Height of a CLS is 55.8in. http://www.mbusa.com/mercedes/vehicles/model/class-CLS/model-CLS550C#specifications

I don't know if i like it. Both the Audi A7 and Mercedes CLS were designed as new models but BMW is only doing a stretched version of the 6-series coupe. Though I didn't really like the A7 at first, and after I got to see it in person I now think it's better looking than the CLS so I'll just have to wait and see the BMW before I'm sure.

I saw the new A7 and the front is dull at best, while the rear reminds me of a dog taking a squat. CLS looks unique in the mercedes lineup, and it looks good.

Racer4, the current CLS is nice but way over styled. It's so over done that at a glance it could be mistaken for short hatchback.

I love the cabin of the A7 and from some angles during traffic it looks alright. But if you drive from behind it in a parking lot, it looks out of shape and odd. The Merc always looks expensive and unique. I'm reserving my judgement of this bimmer for when I see it in person, but right now it seems like a pointless car with no remarkable beauty.

I thought the 6 sereis GC concept came out before the cab and coupe. So technically, the cab and coupe are the ones whiche are been shortened...

Looks great, much nicer than the dated A7. The six series was designed as a coupe, and this is a four door version of it, so it has the most coupe like design in the class.

This is a slightly better looking 5 series. The 6 series and this are built off the 5 series platform. There is not enough differentiation from that standard 5 series to justify the cost increase. The 5 series should have looked like this from the beginning and I agree with most of the other commentators: The MB CLS is better but this looks way better than the Audi A7.

This damn elegant BMW seems to be the dignified successor of the first gen. CLS, after the current one is completely overstyled...

In terms of looks, against the previous CLS, no chance. Now that the CLS is what is it, the 6 series has a much better shot. But as is usual, each person's taste is totally subjective.

The 8 series was and still is one the most respected 2 door Grand Tourers of all time... With a little mods...it would look better than most sports cars of today... And you're saying that beacuse the new BMW Gran Coupe looks like the previous 8 Series you are going to opt for the ugly looking CLS...well they do say that beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder.
