New 550 Spyder would be a revival of the classic open-top 2-seater Porsche and would replace the current Boxster

Porsche CEO Matthias Mueller has told a German newspaper that the brand is mulling a revival of the classic 550 Spyder.

The open-top 2-seat racer would be less-expensive than the current Boxster model, Mueller told the daily Handelsblatt in an interview.

"I can imagine that such a modern version of the famous 'James Dean' Porsche would be well-received by our customers," said Mueller in a story published last Thursday.

We've previously reported on details surrounding a possible new entry-level Porsche model which would slot beneath the Boxster.

That model is said to be scheduled for launch in the summer of 2014 and would come with a (rear) mid-mounted turbocharged 1.6 liter unit with around 200 PS (147 kW / 197 bhp). The starting price for this new entry-level Porsche will be around €39,000 - about €8,000 less than the current Boxster.

I bet Porsche lovers hate this car, it s almost an insult to the Porsche uniqueness for the few. I love it, by the time it comes out I'll be looking for something to replace my handsome Opel GT.

well, I can see the comments coming - "the only reason you'd buy a 550spyder is if you can't afford a Boxster Spyder" I'd be interested to see Porsche's direction in this. There is a very small niche for a light weight strip down model to justify a whole new product. And a well equipped 550, customers are just going to get the Boxster. But then again, Porsche has been proving everyone wrong everytime they have a new car coming out.

I love the original. In fact, that is my dream car. Even when the under powered Porsche Boxster came out during the late 90's everyone wanted one and they sold like crazy. If they attempt to do a 550 spyder they have to establish a set of rules that keep it true to the spirit of original or else don't even bother. The demand for this car will definitely exceed supply.

I think they have this all wrong, the 550 Spyder was basically a race car that could be driven on the street. A GT3 RS Cabriolet would be closer to a 550 Spyder rather then some economy roadster.
