Could debut in Frankfurt

According to a recent report, the 2012 Mercedes SLK55 AMG will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Auto Car says the model will feature a naturally-aspirated 5.5-liter V8 engine with 416 hp (310 kW / 314 PS) and 398 lb-ft (539 Nm) of torque. It will reportedly be equipped with multi-cylinder deactivation (dubbed AMG Cylinder Management) and a start/stop system which will enable the roadster to have a combined fuel economy rating of 33.2 mpg UK (27.6 mpg US / 8.5 L/100 km) and CO2 emissions of 199 g/km.

If that hasn't piqued your interest, there's also word of a SLK 250 CDI with 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS).

I thought only BMW was working on the Tri-Turbo thing... I think an electric compressor would be a better option. We should extract more energy from the Exhaust system using Heat Recuperators and Turbines which turns a high capacity Alternator which in turn operates the Electric Compressor and all other electrical components. I think Honeywell is already working on such technologies.

This is pretty awesome, considering my 99 has 185hp a supercharged four and I am damn luck to get 20 mpg.

416hp in this car is nice but 5.5L V8 is heavy. It woukd be better if the ingine was a twin turbo 3.5L V6 to save weight

187kg is not heavy by v8 standards, it is lighter than BMW's V8 in current M3 and perhaps even lighter than the N54 found in the straight six twin turbo in the 1 M

There is a detailed write up of this engine on the AMG Private Lounge and that puts the weight of the engine at 187KG. Don't wanna give it all away until its fully released to all but a sneak peak on the new exhaust: "Each of the two rear silencers has a flap which is variably activated on a logic-controlled basis depending on the driver's power requirement and the engine speed. At low loads and engine speeds below 2000 rpm the flaps remain closed. This causes the exhaust gases to cover a longer distance and flow through an additional damping element, so that the engine sound is pleasantly subdued and irritating frequencies are effectively suppressed ? resulting in a harmonious sound impression especially in four-cylinder operation when cylinder shut-off is active. When the driver accelerates, the flaps open at an angle of 15, then 30 and up to 50 degrees so that some of the exhaust gases cover the longer, acoustically dampened distance and some the shorter distance. This produces a sonorous engine note. Under full load at higher engine speeds, in performance-oriented eight-cylinder operation, both flaps are fully opened so that the occupants are able to enjoy the decidedly muscular sound typical of an AMG V8. In short, they are left in no doubt about the performance potential of the 310 kW (422 hp) naturally aspirated AMG eight cylinder engine." "The crankcase of the new AMG 5.5-liter V8 engine is of diecast all-aluminum construction. The low (dry) engine weight of just 187 kilograms is the result of uncompromising lightweight construction methods. The bearing covers for the main crankshaft bearings are of grey cast iron, and are bolted to the crankcase, as well as on the sides, for high rigidity."

Yeah...but how do you have to drive to get that 8.5L/100km consumption? I can't even get that in my 2.2l CDI engine...

There is a mistake in text. It's 422 PS, not 314!

I drove the 367 bhp version and it was a beast. This will rip an E92 M3 to shreds thanks to the higher torque. Can't wait to see it.
