Could offer 220 hp (164 kW / 223 PS)

The Volkswagen Golf GTI is the proverbial hot hatch, but the car's 2.0-liter TSI engine is starting to look a little dated.

Thankfully a new report is indicating the next-generation model will come with an upgraded engine that develops 220 hp (164 kW / 223 PS). That's not a huge increase, but it's certainly a welcome improvement over the current 207 hp (155 kW / 210 PS). Furthermore, there's word that both the GTI and R variants will adopt a new electronically-controlled locking differential for improved handling.

In related news, Autocar is reporting Volkswagen is more likely to approve the Golf R Cabrio than the Golf GTI Cabrio. As we have previously reported, the model featured a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with 270 PS (199 kW / 266 hp) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque. It enabled the drop top to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in "less than six seconds" and hit a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).

Golf GTI needs at least 250 hp, and Golf R - at least 300

It wouldn't be necessary if they decrease the overall weight, which they don't! :( Start using more aluminium in the chassis...and you will see. Btw: I want one GTI!

All of these design sketches take evolutionary design to a whole new level this basically looks exactly the same as the current boring looking golf.... Please start making some good looking cars

I think all this power nonsense is overrated nonsense. They should start to differentiate the GTI with better technology and less weight. What the heck is anyone going to do with 250 hp (other than burn more expensive fuel). Light weight. Better tech. Superior handling.

One thing the Golf has is superior handling and built quality. Now the one thing it needs is design. Wake up VW, no wonder Audi sells better than your core brand.

The US market still gets the previous model's (Mark 5) 197 hp engine...

I do not see the value proposition for the US-spec R over the standard GTI if the R is only 36hp more - which ultimately will be cancelled out up by the R's all-wheel halidex weight anyways. VW needs to re-think this.

Just get the APR ref lash done! I have it on my 07. 258hp for 500 bucks. The power happens midrange so it's perfectly drivable. It's also encrypted so it's invisible to diagnostics. Can be switched on and off through the cruise control

I can't understand, Golf 6 came out in the end of 2009 and it's 2010 model, and now Golf 7 is coming out by the end of the next year ?... isn't that TOO EARLY ? what about the facelift ? the problem is , I'm planning to buy Golf R 2012. should I wait for the next generation or should buy this one ?
