New Subaru WRX coming in 2014 as a completely separate model from the Impreza

The Subaru WRX will come as an entirely new sport coupe with an STI variant with WRC ambitions

Subaru will be introducing the next WRX in 2014 as an entirely separate model from the Impreza range.

The WRX will become a sport coupe of its own with a very different design from the new Impreza. The two models will continue to share a platform but the upcoming WRX will have a shortened wheelbase for better handling.

Says a Subaru source to Motor Trend:

"The first thing you must understand about our all-new WRX is that we have developed it from the ground up to win in motorsports events. That's why we have focused so heavily on weight issues, not to mention a shorter wheelbase that permits faster, more precise turn-in. Marry that to our proven AWD system, and we think we have a winner."

The WRX will also feature a variant STI upon which a future WRC rally car will be based - a competition which Subaru plans to return to.

The standard 2014 Subaru WRX will likely feature a 1.6 liter turbocharged boxer unit with around 270 PS (199 kW / 266 bhp), although Subaru is also working on a twin-charged supercharger system.

The WRX STI variant will feature that same powerplant setup dialed up to around the 304 PS (224 kW / 300 bhp) mark for a true WRC-linked road rager.

They should make a hybrid WRX and BRZ. All the models for that matter. Don't change the engine but add a small Li battery pack and an inline electric motor between the engine and transmission. More MPGs

Subaru should build the SVX again, with 3.0L Boxer-6 and twin turbo setup, with AWD and more than 500hp....just add the sleek design and you have a gorgeous car!

Amin to that! Better yet: use the current 3.6 liter engine from the Tribeca, built the SVX on the Legacy basis, have a convertible one also, all in just one highly equiped STi lunatic body kit version of more than 500hp like you've said! ....man I pray with the next Impreza STi Subaru will get it right! They are soooo missing great oportunities to benefit from the heritage of WRC these days!

OK, this trend needs to stop. People loved the Skyline GTR because it was an affordable "super car" that could seat 4. Then, Nissan makes the GTR a separate car pricing it out of the hands of a large number of people. Now, Subaru wants to follow the same path. These cars have a following because they are accessible to people who aren't uberrich douchebags. I see a bad direction Japanese cars taking away from their roots.

As it is written in source. Subaru seperated impreza and WRX because of many reasons but one of them is that Impreza WRX STI had different components than Impreza. Upgrading into WRX STI was costy, and Subaru want to make new model more affordable.

300hp+ for a 1.6T is impressive for a streetcar. I want to test it. The Design might be a great prove. I hope Subaru see this ;)

Personally I think "Artist Rendering" should be printed in bold across the picture. That or don't post a picture with the article. Too many people comment "that's hideous!" when in reality we have no idea what a future car may look like. Just my 2cents.

This is brilliant news! As a huge fan of Subarus, it's great to see Subaru returning to the WRC and possibly making a successor to the Impreza 22B.

Yes indeed, perhaps the Subaru "FT-86" version could be just the car for WRC entry. I hoped it would look much more better than Toyota and Scion ones.

No it is not, both MT and my renders were photochops so they are not the real deal. I hoped the official model would look much better.
