New triple turbo 3.0 liter diesel unit from BMW will be good for between 350 PS (258 kW / 345 bhp) and 400 PS (294 kW / 395 bhp)

According to BMW Blog, who's sister site Bimmer Today cites sources inside the company, BMW will introduced a tri-turbo diesel power plant next spring in the facelifted X6 model.

The new diesel unit will displace 3.0 liters, be fitted with a triple turbocharger system, and have an output of between 350 PS (258 kW / 345 bhp) and 400 PS (294 kW / 395 bhp). It will first be introduced in the X6 xDrive50d model which will debut in March 2012.

The new diesel unit will also make it into the facelifted 2012 7-Series next year, a model expected to debut later this year. The 750d will also be offered with xDrive (all-wheel-drive system) and in an extended wheelbase variant designated the 750Ld.

Wow, 400hp diesel is great news! This is going to be a very popular unit. Rumor is the 4.4 petrol will also get a power boost with the refresh. BMW really does make the best engines, keep up the good work.

Maybe soon we will have turbos like gear boxes. eight turbos lined up changing from small to large~

Why not to couple every cylinder with its own turbocharger :))

the rumors in Germany are that the first model will be the 550d in march 2012. and that this model will only be available with xdrive. it's also said to have close to 400bhp (which would match the mentioned 395)!

BMW's next move: an engine with 4 turbos! oh wait...

Yeah, yeah... I get the idea behind downsizing but BMW seems to be taking it way too seriously. Nobody's expecting them to make a V12 diesel to match the muscular Q7 V12 TDI. But their top-range models like the 7-series and the X5/6 could use a proper V8 unit.

...on the forefront of my but. im sorry but i have to disagree with you. but adding more super/turbochargers to an engine isnt special. im sure uve heard of quad turbocharged engines, and im sure you cand quad turbocharge almost any engine. yes, this is something new, but not unheard of, or hard to make. and another thing... i believe that using 3 turbochargers on an in-line 6 engine, is pretty ineffiecient...as layout im refferring. that would mean one turbo for every 2 cylinders, very close positioned to each other, plus the intercoolers. the engine bay, pipes, would be a nightmare. i believe they are going to use 2 turbos on the side, and a supercharger on top. to me this sounds a better layout

agreed Norther. I read the comments about BMW leading engine development as just a little too much BMW fanboy hype. Twin Turbo V6s come close to this power already depending on tuning. (GTR for example) I think a V6 with a turbo and a supercharger would produce this much power and be more efficient. This is over-engineering for no purpose except to produce the first tri-turbo.

It depends whether they are staged (sequential series) and how, like previously used in the Mazda Cosmo and currently used in powerful twin-turbo diesels (which was actually a first on diesels on the straight-6 535d's Variable Twin-Turbo with the BorgWarner R2S system, then used on all x35d, recent 740d, and on the straight-4 123d plus non-BMW)

plus do not confuse the sequential series (small turbo then both turbos then big turbo) with sequential parralel (1 turbo then both turbos), the latter being more common (e.g. Porsche 959, Mazda RX-7 "FD3S", Toyota Supra "JZA8"...)

People on this site like to make a lot of noise but don?t say anything meaningful, or back it up with facts. It?s just fan boys rambling. There is more to an engine than high output numbers, even thought BMW's diesel are among the best in that regard. There is also engine flexibility, linear power delivery, and smoothness of rev build up. BMW Engines are highly refined, and at the top of many of their respected classes . It?s no fluke they win so many awards, despite some fanboys conspiracy theories. The 3 turbo layout in question utilizes two conventional exhaust driven turbos , and a third electric (or small exhaust driven) turbo for low rpm. The electric (or small exhaust driven) turbo (which again will only work at low rpm) in conjunction with the two conventional turbos(high rpm) will virtually eliminate turbo lag.

@autoficianado, I'm not a fanboy, but you are comparing the power output of a GT-R, which uses a gasoline engine, to the power output of a diesel engine. That's a huge apples-to-oranges comparison, dude. Diesels are about torque figures and don't run at the revs that gasoline engines do. I challenge you to find finer diesel engines in the 2.0L and the 3.0L class than those which appear in the BMW 525d and 535d respectively. Admittedly, BMW are very good at engine design.

Wouldn't this just become a nightmare if something went wrong? Failing turbos are the reason I keep away fron 2nd hand diesels; you just don't know how it was being driven!

Failing turbos are also a reason you should stay away from newer BMW gas engines too!
