Could have a tri-tubo 3.3-liter six-cylinder

New details are starting to emerge about the 2014 BMW M3 as Auto Express recently sat down for an interview with Dr Friedrich Nitschke - the managing director of M GmbH.

The executive was reluctant to discuss specifics, but said the next-generation M3 would have a "bigger focus on very low fuel consumption." That's a tad vague, but the magazine says the car will feature a tri-turbocharged 3.3-liter six-cylinder engine with approximately 450 hp (336 kW / 456 PS). Additionally, we can expect aggressive styling and a lightweight body that adopts carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) components.

Besides talking about the M3, Nitschke revealed a Z4 M is "something we could do easily" and an M1 revival is possible. More interestingly, Auto Express says a 1-Series M CSL is under development and could draw inspiration from the tii concept.

great...engine 6 cylinder 3.3liter and 3 turbos...very nice...try to make those horsepower numbers closer to 500 because Merc C63 AMG Black series is already ahead

Well its not all about horsepower, the M3 will most likely continue to weigh less than any AMG C-class Mercedes, standard or Black Series.

What's more interesting is what is said about a rival for Lamborghini.

450hp with a carbon fiber body shell sounds very promising!!! Its good to see BMW is leading the way with the mass production of Carbon Fiber.

BMW is not leading the way for carbon fiber use in automobiles. The 2009 Corvette ZR1 beat it by a couple years. On March 10, 2011 Japanese company Teijin Limited established the world's first mass production technologies for carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). Also Mercedes is currently using a carbon fibre driveshaft and some additional parts in the SLS AMG.

All the cars you mentioned are not mass produced they are low production exotic cars. LOL

Word is, the megacity cars will have body shells made of CFRP. That will change the ENTIRE market.

Will this new 3er be built on the present 5er chassis but with a shorter wheel base ? Like the 7er is the same chasssis as the 5er but few inches longer. It looks very similar

The 7 and 5 share the same chassis, but the 3 series is not included. There designs are becoming a little more conservative, but do not look identical like Audi!!

You are right. I very much deslike the fact that some brands make all their cars look the same. I appreciate Audi and BMW for their enginering but I refuse to consider them because of their identical design.

Love the direction with the motor, but BMW has lost all credibility with there use of the word "lightweight"

BMW is further along with bringing carbon fiber mainstream than other manufactures. They have there own carbon fiber plant with SGL. You will see the results of there investment starting materialize within the next few years.

A straight Six M3...I dont like. 3 turbos...I like. Are they trying to insert a Dynacharger into the vehicle to reduce the engine losses? Are they relocating the alternator to be driven by the exhaust?...hmm...interesting.

"...Nitschke revealed a Z4 M is "something we could do easily" and an M1 revival is possible." Well, I hoped he would commit those "said" future sportscars/supercar plans with action. There is no point to get excited if those plans were not carried out in the first place. At the least, show some tangible proof.

It seems like the M3 is starting to become more of a supercar now. I'm not exactly sure what to think about this.

First they said that they won't build z4 m, now they are saying they might (Full rumour). Now speaking of the three turbochargers, the design might be efficient and dynamic but once those turbochargers or one of them go wrong, it's going to get expensive let alone doubt it will feel like a M. Yes, M's are all about chassis' but engine's have gone way out of the M tradition. Yes, I'm a bm enthusiast but just for competition, they are making different cars that are no longer the as fun as the cars that bmw fanatics like. If they put the legendary csl badge on a 1 series, they would lose a lot of enthusiasts as well as respect. This is why I believe these are rumours and won't become a reality.

M cars should be powered by an natural engine, Straight 6 or V8. Manual as standard and a auto as an option. Rear wheel drive as standard and Xdrive as an option. NO viagra sorry turbos/supercharges.

Not sure what BMW is up to with the M badge. It's being prostituted a bit too much on 'soft' models. And 3 turbos...posers will love mentioning that about their new M3s.
