Toyota Celica at Goodwood Festival of Speed - 4.7.2011

Completed the course in 48.07 seconds

In a surprise turn of events, a Toyota Celica took top honors for being the fastest vehicle to race up the 1.6 mile (2.57 km) long driveway of the Goodwood House.

With former British Rally Champion Jonny Milner behind the wheel, the modified coupe - with a supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that develops 700 hp (522 kW / 710 PS) and over 800 hp (597 kW / 811 PS) with a nitrous oxide boost - rocketed up the course in just 48.07 seconds.

Hey Toyota! How about some onboard video?

TOYOTA CELICA FASTEST CAR AT GOODWOOD 2011

Taking just 48.07 seconds to blast up the 1.6 mile driveway of Goodwood House, a 800bhp Toyota Celica was the fastest car overall at Goodwood Festival of Speed, 2011.

To win the Celica had to beat many famous racing cars, including recent Formula 1 cars.

The car was driven and built by former British Rally Champion, Jonny Milner. Milner had narrowly missed out in previous years and returned in 2011 with an extra 100bhp to clinch the FTD (fastest time of the day) in front of a massive crowd swelled by the presence of stars such as F1 champion Lewis Hamilton.

Rising over 300ft from the start line to the finish, the course is very technical and challenging, putting the skills of the world's very best drivers and riders to the ultimate test of concentration and speed.

A small mistake by former British Rally Champion Milner meant he narrowly missed winning the televised "shootout" on Sunday afternoon, but his time set earlier in the day was the fastest of all 200 cars over the prestigious three day event.

Based on the sixth generation Celica, Milner's car is super-lightweight, tipping the scales at just 1,050kg. For better weight distribution, the driver's position has moved back 12 inches, and the car's centre of gravity has been lowered by raising the wheel arches and upper suspension mounts. A flat floor and rear diffuser add a degree of ground effect.

The engine is from a World Rally Championship winning Corolla, newly fitted with a Rotrex supercharger that will help raise maximum output to more than 800bhp. A nitrous oxide injection system helped reduce turbo-lag for quicker acceleration off the line. Super soft rallycross specification Michelin slick tyres also played an important role in getting all that horsepower to the ground.

@ EMBJATI85 Back in 1980?s cash strapped, money-seeking Lotus was providing engineering consultancy to Toyota in particular multi-valve engine technology. Lotus also helped with the tuning of the chassis and suspension and a certain Lotus engineer Roger Becker was sent to Japan to do this and also teach Toyota engineers the same know-how... Not that Toyota told the world about this, though. Alas today there is not so much input from Lotus and it shows in the handling of most of their products, though I?m not sure if any of the car enthusiasts on this website have noticed... :)

The successor to the AE86 is coming out next year. Hopefully it will give Toyota a better image.

I wonder if this car is still FWD or they have converted it into a RWD one. Don't remember if that version of Celica had the All-Trac version.

I hoped Toyota could return to the WRC with an FT-86, since it has the resources to support independent racers/teams such as Milner. Imo, I see it as a future Celica in the making.

I really don't know what is wrong with Toyota..they could have a car comparable to the Nissan GT-R...the new Toyota Supra, but they are ignorat and they do not see how successful others are with that kind of car! don't mention Lexus LFA cos that is 400 000?....for 100K ? they need inline 6 twin turbo RWD revival of Supra!!!!

Plz, it ran on NOS and had a modified force induction system. Impressive for only a 4 banger but understand that this has about as much in common with a stock Celica as it does a Ferrari Enzo! As for the event itself, I now know why they call it 'Goodwood'. It's a car guy's automotive utopia ...gave me good wood as well!
