Game changer?

A week after we spied the 2012 Mercedes A-Class for the first time, the model is back in the spotlight with less camouflage.

The main body panels are heavily covered, but the car will feature a dramatic design that was previewed by the A-Class concept. Specific details are hard to pin down, but the prototype appears to have less extraneous styling with a traditional Mercedes grille and toned-down tail lights.

Engine options will likely be shared with the 2012 B-Class, so expect five petrols with 109 PS (80 kW / 108 hp) to 204 PS (150 kW / 201 hp) as well as four diesels with 122 PS (90 kW / 120 hp) to 204 PS (150 kW / 201 hp).

If that hasn't sparked your interest, Mercedes has already confirmed an AMG variant is in the works. Speculation suggests the model could be called the A25 and feature a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with 325 PS (239 kW / 321 hp) to 355 PS (261 kW / 350 hp). Additionally, there's the possibility of a dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive.

The new five-door will likely be unveiled sometime next year, so expect to learn more in the coming months.

First, Anchorman is old. Secondly, that camo'd car looks like it's been shot by some futuristic sound weapon.

Does A in A-Class stand for Astra because it looks eerily like a GM Astra.

I actually wanted Merc to keep that ugly A class coz it was unique. This is just following the herd like BMW and Lexus did to rival A3 of all cars.

that's kind of a silly statement. the A3 and 1-Series decimated the A-Class in sales. Mercedes isn't going to hold onto an ideal for the sake of profit, especially when the ideal wasn't what the public wanted. i hope the A-Class is something unique and different, because as it stands the A3 stands leagues ahead of the competition in terms of sales, practicality and looks and on balance it's good enough to drive as well. if the A-Class provides a decent competitor for the A3 then the whole class will move up a notch to compete, and i'm all for that. sadly i think Merc will bottle it. it won't look anywhere near as good as the concept.

Looks okay but think Mercedes should have called it the B-Class not the A-Class. The A Class, imo, is that horrid, ugly little thing that rolls over every time it sees a Moose! (known as the moose test :)

Ugly or not , I like the old A .It's easy to park cause it's compact .But the interior space is the same as Golf or something else .This new A is just a Bmw 1 competitor .Mercedes should stay on their track and leave Bmw alone . My bikes don't fit in the Bmw 1s but in the A they fit . bleah

@sub39h : you said : "the A3 and 1-Series decimated the A-Class in sales" -- says who? Do you posses any comparative global sales figures, or are figments of your imagination to be assumed as facts?
