2012 Corvette Z06 laps the N?rburgring [video]

Corvette Z06 fitted with the Z07 chassis package takes its turn on the Green Hell

The 2012 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 laps the Nürburgring in 7 minutes 22.68 seconds and we get to see it all in this video.

The driver is Corvette engineer Jim Mero and the time he posted beats the previous Z06 record set back in 2005 by a long 20 seconds as well as being just 3 seconds behind Mero's own lap time with the ZR1.

This Z06 has been fitted with the Z07 chassis package which helps the car takes those curves and dips on the Green Hell here.

The Z06 places just ahead of the Porsche 911 GT2 RS, which set a time of 7:24 on the ring last year with Sport Auto driver Horst von Saurma.

That is f.ucking amazing. So damn old school. Push-rod motor? Check. Manual transmission? Check. Leaf springs? Check. Corvette is the testament to new is not always better. Sometimes you just need to build on what you have.

As an American, I am so proud that the Z06 is regarded among the world's best and most coveted supercars. I love this car.

this is absolutely not among the world's best supercars... It's just a Corvette, cheap interior, unsafe drive, plastic body and stuff like that. However if you put 500 cars to that "world's best supercars list" now the Z06 can enter your list

Ouch, sorry m3digi somebody should have warned you that a little patriotism mixed with domestic auto love will result in pure hate. But the haters will hate, there is no changing that. I assume somebody will come on here soon claiming that factory times cannot be trusted, even though there is a video... oh wait there it is, man that fast, the haters must be working overtime today. "Hey everybody there is an article on WCF saying good things about an American car, quickly everybody say something negative! No time to base your ideas on facts just post them!"

I think it's all been said here, so I'm not going to fuel the debate. My remarks weren't intended to create any bias toward American cars. It's just nice to have one American car that's regard among the world's great supercars. Thanks to all those who have added some context (and maturity) to the debate.

well said m3diqi. I am not American and yet I am proud of the Corvette. It shows that we can enjoy a supercar at a logical price. Shumy have you been inside a Corvette? Yes its interior is not world best but it is not bad at all. Corvette has come a long way in the last 20 years to compete with the best and stand proud.

Is this a joke? I didn't say anything about America? you guys are so sensitive about american cars... I really appreciate the fact that Corvette is faster than a LOT of the other cars. But I just don't like the quality of the car. Corvette is an american car so it should be better in terms of the quality. I know not all can be at the same time since they are trying to lower the costs in some way but they should try something else or just increase the price to create a real american supercar. By the way PAA, yes I have been once inside a Corvette when a friend was looking to buy one. How do you expect me to say it's has a "cheap interior" if ve never been inside. I still don't think Corvette is: "among the world's best and most coveted supercars." and it's because it has a cheap interior, it is unsafe, and the materials used on the car are cheap and simple as well. Not only the speed and/or the acceleration of the car can put it on a list where cars like Porsche Turbo, Ferrari, Lamborghini and Aston Martin exist.

This is extremely impressive!...kudos to the driver too, he pushed hard 100% of the time...the gt2 rs should be embarrassed.

factory times, when will people learn that they cannot be trusted, no matter which carmaker claims them. independent tests are the only ones to trust.

I agree with B M Gearhead. A good car is a good car whether it's American made, German, Japanese, Asian etc... It's a little frustrating reading the remarks when they are so unbalanced. America is part of the world, right? ...and this is World Car fan site...right? Sure the car needs a better interior but it does not have leaf springs and it's a technological tour de force to have a pushrod engine operate with the best of the overhead cam engines and it's not turbo-charged or supercharged. It definitely performs well.

It does have leaf springs... though not the kind that most people seem to think. Also, have you seen the new interior upgrades? http://www.autospies.com/images/users/Joe_Limon/main/2012-Interior.jpg

I said this many times before, there is nothing better on the market for a sports car in the price of a Corvette. No GT-R no nothing. It has always been like that and will continue on for years to come.

@shumy, you talk about a cheap interior, let me tell you something. Let's take your average $300,000 supercar that has been stripped out to male it go faster, like a Lamborghini gallardo Lp570-4 superleggerra. Lamborghini has done so much to make the interior ligh that you get worse seats and NO air conditioning. Lamborghini tries to make a car go fast By stripping out the interior so that you give up so many luxuries, but chevy manages to make a car for less than a third the price that whoops the "supercar makers" ass. And I think the vette has got air conditioning, and this isn't even a ZR1, it's a Z06.

corvette proved that its faster and unbeatable . but it's still a corvette . i don't even understand why it can never be a super car? i don't think it can ever be compared to italian or german cars ever . chevy lab is wasting money on this junk and people will still admire the less powerful ferrari and lambo. chevy will keep showing it off and beating times.. but it will always be a rednecks dream car.

Has anyone ever stopped to consider that maybe GM isn't even trying to make a supercar? To reach supercar status you have to be 1. exclusive and 2. very expensive. That is fun and all but Chevy is in this to sell cars not take part in the snobbery scene.

Yes the time is impressive, but I can't like the Vette. I had a few in my time and until Chevy can learn how to make an interior that isn't full of low-grade materials I will never consider another one. I'm a "red-blooded, patriotic American", but Italy and Germany still get my dollar vote for automobiles. There's nothing quite like the sound of the LP560's note at 8,000+ RPM and the feel and smell of Italian leather everywhere. I'm not saying the Gallardo interior isn't ready for a major overhaul, but American car companies need to get with the times and update the interiors to be comparable to the same level as European cars. Yes, a ZR-1 is faster than my Gallardo, but what's with that plastic bubble in the hood and "pleather" on the seats? Next goal....Aventador!

thats the same thing i think about the Corvette and American car companies i also dont understand why they havent made the move or at least checked out other car companies like bmw or mercedes benz, missan or any other car company of the same level and see how the quality is in those cars. I am not buying an american car until the quality improves and i dont mean to say that in a offensive way

All of those who place the interior so high on the list of ''deciding factors'' of a supercar; if you guys are right, the Ford GT isnt a supercar either, alongwith many others. Although, the updated interior in the Vette isnt ground breaking, it definitely is acceptable. Moreover, if you talk about supercars, the prime criteria is performance, and for a properly loaded car with ''only'' 500bhp, to go that fast on the 'ring, this is defo one hell of an achievement. Finally, somebody has managed to better the GTR with less hp. (excluding the radicals, donkervoort etc, which arent really proper cars)

+1, if a 400 something hp audi is a supercar, then this 500 something vette is more than a sports car.

 GRAVE GRAVE
The Corvette is very fast because its light, if the GTR has the same weight of the Vette it will smoke the Vette any time and can lap the ring in less than 7:15

 YuZi YuZi
Yeah, thats the point. With all the gadgetry and the 4WD system, the GTR cannot be that light. Nissan chooses a different formula to go faster, and Chevy uses another (which is actually more traditional too). I'm not starting a Vette vs GTR debate here, both cars are very dear to me. Dismissing this car's credentials by saying its faster coz its light is a dreadful dreadful viewpoint. There's lots of things that make it go fast. Why cant people appreciate a beautifully balanced chassis? Just to give you an example, the MC-12 is much more powerful, and much lighter, and a brutally hardcore experience inside. It is however slightly slower than this Vette on the ring too. Chassis dynamics has advanced by leaps and bounds in recent years, and the Vette is a prime example of that.

although I'm no fan of american cars.. u gotta remember that even with leaf springs.. the Corvette is amongst the most successful GT racer in Le Mans which is pretty high praise and they won it this year too with strong competition from 458s, M3s, Astons and endless Porsches..

I love to come on this website just to read the hater's comments! It's amazing how they will always find something to bash when it's not german... What I say is that a Piece of shit with 4 wheels and a german logo on it will be an amazing car! That Corvette is unarguably wonderful. Yeah American cars used to be a synonym of shit...Now tables have turned. I wish you haters are going to adapt your point of view and accept the truth..cause its only in your wet dreams where american cars can't compete against those german/english/japanese cars which are baddass cars!!

Not bad, I don't doubt the time around the ring, but I wonder about pulling 1.7g on road tyres.
June 25, 2011 11:47 pm
 Joe_Limon Joe_Limon
Most vehicles can pull over 1g. But very few can sustain 1g of lateral acceleration. let alone at slow speeds where most lateral acceleration tests are done.

Most of the big 3 have rental car interiors which should be improved to compete with the imports. All cars are expensive and there should be no excuse for subpar interiors. It is amazing GM has done so well with 2 valve/cylinder engines
