Yep, which is a good thing given the design of the Porsche line. Now, can they make it behave like a true Porsche despite its "low" power? Then they'll have a hit car for the masses. Good for the company but not for the Porsche fanatics.

A Porsche with an inline 4 cylinder engine producing just 200 hp. God help us all...

Power isn't everything, however i dont believe that it will gives a good feeling of driving, so within a power it would be worthless porsche. just like 944..

When introduced back in 1996, the Porsche Boxster produced 201hp out of the M96 codename engine. Never doubt about Porsche's ability of making significant power updates out of it's engines, specially if they are turbocharged

Brand whores will jump on it like flies to crumbs of a good cake but do we honestly want this? Part of the appeal of owning a Porsche is the exclusivity and this just throws me off the brand as it will me very common.

Aside from the affordable VW-Porsche 914 and 924, the first production Porsches were little 4-cylinder cars (the 356).
If Porsche can make an affordable roadster that handles and performs well, why not?
I hope they push through with it.

now that Lotus becomes fat, it's good to see the 550 back in the picture.

The Porsche 550 Stuttgart. I wonder if they'll upgrade it to a 575 Stuttgart a few years later.

For ?39,000 there's a lot of metal on sale that can offer buyers more than 200bhp and decent sports car handling.
The image of the Boxster is dubious at best (watch the new series of Top Gear if you don't know what I mean), this car is definitely built for young women.
Give us a ?30k fixed head coupe please. If you seriously want to own a Porsche, take your 39k Euros and buy a pre-owned 997 from a main dealer.

This car will be based on the Audi TT chassis and will probly have and Audi engine so not really a porsche at the end of the day.

No, you're wrong. Porsche will develope the platform for this car, and the engine. Then Audi and VW will base their own mini sportscars on this platform, albeit with less power, and a lower price.
I guarantee you this will be a true Porsche. The original 356 only had around 95hp (the most powerful variant). Yes, I understand this is modern day, but this car will be closer to Porsche's philosophy and soul than, dare I say it, the 911.
The idea of a Porsche is small, lightweight, small power outputs, small engines, good sound, fluid handling, and most importantly, it shouldn't be trendy.

I don't mind at all if they use an Impreza style Flat-4 rather than an inline-4. It would be nice if it was sub 2500lbs in weight.

This will be a roughly $50,000 car so the mustang v6 will blow its doors off in price and performance. Porsche needs to get real with their pricing.

I like the design to current porsches, BUT an engine producing only 197 hp in a porsche doesn't do the style justice. it looks fast, but it won't go fast. not good, not good.

A four-pot boxer engine without feminine styling would be nice, but not at 39 G's.

Good news, 1.6 turbo with lightweight can be real fast. Looking forward to this car.

can be fast but everything is not about the speed. Yes not all cars are that powerful but this is nothing besides the other ones... 197hp is an engine of a mini cooper...

Small, light weight, high revving, variable geometry turbo. Yes I'll take one or two.
June 23, 2011 9:32 pm
If it is light enough, it will be fine. Besides, inevitably there will be an S model with 240-270 hp.
It sounds like VWs Bluesport won't even have a power top, so if this is similarly decontented, it could almost be the Boxster Spyder/Cayman R purist equivalent.

Porsche should price it around US$35,000.00, no electronic aids, basic dampers, 4wheel abs atmost and fun to drive. Oh yeah don't delete the a/c, make it like the 1st gen mazda mx5 no driving aids. It'll sell like hot cakes for sure
