U.S. unit of Volkswagen says it can develop its own special editions

Contrary to previous reports, Volkswagen of America says it doesn't want the Golf GTI Edition 35.

The special edition Golf GTI which debuted at the GTI meet Wörthersee and is meant to celebrate the model's 35th anniversary in Europe, will not be making it to the United States market, according to a new report by Car & Driver.

Says a Car & Driver source, who is a VW marketing executive in Germany, "VW of America do their own special editions. The GTI is selling very well over there and they don't need special editions to move it...VW of America simply didn't want the car."

There were several drawbacks in bringing the model to the United States as it is being offered in Europe, such as the sports seats which do not meet federal safety standards, as well as the front spoiler which VW of America believed was too low for US roads.

But the news doesn't rule out VW of America using some of the Edition 35 kit for its own special edition Golf GTI, just don't hold your breath on it.

The GTI Edition 35 features a revised 2.0 liter TFSI petrol engine (a detuned version of the 2.0 liter TFSI unit in the Golf R) that develops 235 PS (173 kW / 232 hp) - a gain of 25 PS over the 211 PS (155 kW / 207 hp) of the standard GTI.

The car is available for order in Germany with prices starting at €30,425.

Americans can not have the racing seats because fatties could not get out of it! When they sit there will be some suction and they can never get out of the car again xD

LBento, ur being so rude. it is not the fact that larger people cant get out of a car with sprtseats, it is that...they cannot fit into them in the first place. duuuhhh :))) this is rude i know... sorry :) but this, is lame: "...the sports seats which do not meet federal safety standards, as well as the front spoiler which VW of America believed was too low for US roads."

I think that Fraulein Gestapo, on the left-side of the car, could extricate just about any fattie from the car. This is regardless of whether they got that way from brats or burgers.

Only a moron would imply that Europe does not have "fatties". I'm sure the "fatties" in Europe think you are as big a jerk as I do. Signed, "Fattie"

I actually moved from Canada to the UK and have never seen so many "fatties", so it is rather funny that the Brits always make comments about the Americans, the fact that the obescity level in the UK is on the rise and that of the US is decreasing, hmmm interesting how it works out in the end.

Maybe you are not. But the Gti does sell very well in the U.S. The article is referring the to Special Edition 35, not the standard production Gti.

This now increases the chance we may see a "Wolfsburg Edition" GTI for the US market that will use the drivetrain and suspension kit from the GTI 35, but with US-market specific body kits.

I wonder what seats were in the Corvettes......the ones that had double class victory at LeMans...ouch. The ones that had their motors DE-TUNED so all the competitors cars that cost twice as much could TRY to compete. LBento you are a thumb d*** little chimp
