 Audi goes crossover crazy - Q1, Q4 & Q6 rumored
Audi Pikes Peak quattro concept car design sketch 06.01.2003

A dizzying array of possibilities

According to a recent report, Audi is considering three additional crossovers to augment the Q3, Q5 and Q7.

Details are sketchy, but the Q1 could be a high-riding A1 with crossover styling. There's also the possibility the model could be based on the next-gen A2 or A3, but nothing is certain and a launch may occur anywhere from 2013 to 2016.

Next up, Automobile says the Q6 will be based on the Q5 and tackle the BMW X6.  This contradicts previous reports that the model would be underpinned by the next-generation Q7, but the magazine suggests the vehicle will offer a 220 hp (164 kW / 223 PS) 2.0-liter four-cylinder TFSI as well as a new turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that produces 300 hp (224 kW / 304 PS) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. It could be launched in 2016.

Lastly, the Q4 could go three different ways: three-door coupe, sporty five-door, or aggressive off-roader. Pick your favorite and prepare to wait - the model isn't expected until 2017.

SUV's are driven by "poor" drivers who don't realize the ride difference between a tall and a low car. It just feels good for their self esteem to ride high above the others. Sorry guys but the SUVs only come with negatives and if you want practicality get a station wagon, it's all around better.

i live in Eastern Europe, where the most X6s are. and for good reason, if you want to go outside of the main road in a 7 series or an S class, you're screwed. SUVs are great in 3rd world countries, also for people who use the cars on unpaved roads.

PAA what are you talking about?? First of all it's about taste. You can like better SUV's than regular cars. Secondly you can be bored of sedans, sports cars or whatever and decide to buy an SUV if you have enough money. Thirdly you can have an SUV if you want to be better protected and still have some performance (Cayenne Turbo, BMW X6M for example). And finally, not all of the options are available everywhere around the world: I have a BMW SAV and would go to the RS6 avant if it was available where I live but no... so depends. You can't use the word "poor" for all of the SUV drivers

I don't think so. Daimler & BMW are not that stupid to build 6 SUVs...crossovers slightly more likely but still a very long shot. The tightening fuel/mpg laws and the cost of petrol will not help in the marketplace for heavy, fuel-thirsty SUVs.

sorry autoficianado you're wrong..bmw already has 4 crossover suvs, 5 counting the 5 GT. mercedes already has 4, 5 counting the r class. i wouldn't put it above them to quit at this rate.

In addition Audi has a Q5 convertible on the way.....Since Porsche is in charge of all the sports car, and large sedan development, and VW for small cars, all Audi has left are SUV's. lol.

In a recent report covered here, Audi was tasked by VW to handle SUVs R&D needs within the VAG (see article: http://www.worldcarfans.com/110121330005/audi-to-head-development-of-porsche-suvs), so it is no surprise that Ingolstadt would create and produce an SUV lineup for itself. It is indeed dismal that Audi was told to follow such a strategy in the name of "profiteering", but doing such business would enable the company to get more funds for improved R&D work to better existing (and popular) cars such as the A3, A4, A6, TT and R8 future variants.

Remember when Toyota went SUV crazy in the US while dropping its sportscars...that was then beginning of their boring ways... This move by Audi...if it is true will be a start to their demise.

Well, in all fairness these cashcows (I mean 'SUVs') help Audi and other manufacturers to stay profitable and produce much better cars; The new A6 and A6 Avant, RS5, RS3 Sportback, A7, A8 and I probably assume, many other of Audi's vehicles' R&D was funded by money made by those awful SUVs!

I guess the Q6 will be a sportier Q5, so it won?t be able to tackle the BMW X6, which is based on the X5. Audi Q5 = BMW X3. So the Q6 would be a competitor to a BMW X4. Holy Moly... the whole figure thing confuses the poor customers.

The only caveat I have for the sale of these vehicles is that I hope Audi doesn't drop the estate versions of their sedans. Or doesn't restrict the engine/trim levels in the estates to a couple of meh options. I'm just about to replace my A4 and I want a car with more cargo space, but I don't want to buy a 4x4. If I did, I'd just buy a Landcruiser or Discovery.

OK go ahead, but please do not build a hideous Ssangyong/ X6 thing.

Do we need more SUVs? Sporty SUVs...just slap bigger engines in the current crop and call them 'S' variants. I don't think that VAG chasis policy was meant to come out like this though a Wrangler type vehicle from Audi maybe interesting and may spawn a Lambo variant.... But I still don't want anymore!

and yet again, this is when i say......Does Audi really need more cars (this time it's SUV's) in their lineup!? so what if they are competing, all their vehicles are similar, just different sizes basically!

c'mon Audi...what's next inline? Q8, Q9 and Q10???? All your car look the same...especially the fronts, there were no significant changes for nearly a decade, especiallly get rid of the front grill...

please put the Q6 out and I will take it with V12 TDI....that would be the best GT SUV ever!

The only difference between all of these forthcoming SUV Audi's will be the name on the backside. They will also look like a copy of the other. What the f*ck is it with VW and Audi?? They run out of ideas??
