CEO downplays EVs in the short-term

Volkswagen was a little late to the hybrid game, but the company has ambitious plans to offer a hybrid variant of every model they produce.

Speaking with Auto Motor und Sport, VW CEO Martin Winterkorn revealed that he doesn't believe EV technology is ready for the prime time and is "firmly convinced" plug-in hybrids will be the only viable option for the next ten years.

Winterkorn also went on record to say that range-extended vehicles - like the Chevrolet Volt - make a lot of sense and the company has developed a TT prototype that uses a single-cylinder engine to augment an electric powertrain.

Despite his negatively towards current EV techonlogy, Winterkorn is optimistic about the future as he noted lithium-sulfur batteries have three times the energy density of lithium-ion batteries. More importantly, the upcoming lithium-air batteries, due in 2025, could have four to five times the energy density. That's a long way away, but the executive indicated the lithium-air technology could enable an EV to travel up to 800 km (497 miles) on a single charge.

EV is great especially as the technology catches on. It will be nice to have a vehicle with essentially no maintenance. No oil, transmission, or radiator fluid changes, no fuel etc.

Don't kid yourself. There will still be plenty of maintenance to be done on electric vehicles.

So when will we have a hybrid version of the Bettle ? The Bettle would be the perfect hybrid if it would come with the fine 2.0 TDI under the hood .

what's the point? hybrid is NOT the way forward, nor is it any better than a regular diesel. anyone else seen ppl in their "holier than thou" Prius bombing it down the road, wringing the neck of their 1.5 and not at all using the electric motor? i can assure you my petrol 2.0T travelling at 55mph as they shoot past is getting better fuel economy, and is so is the diesel that's trying to keep up with them.

Hybrid's are a logical step on the path to future propulsion systems in road going vehicles. A large amount of the technology needed for future EV's, and series hybrids is being developed from technology being deployed in parallel and power split hybrid vehicles. We didn't go from mechanical typewriters to multicore laptops in one jump.

Now that is an Automaker with balls... Even though I'm not much of a VW fan, I totally support you efforts... Way to go VW... P.S.: Please consider RWD C or D segment cars in the future.
