VW Tiguan TDI delayed until 2015 in U.S. - report
2012 Volkwagen Tiguan facelift 04.02.2011

Won't come until the redesigned model is launched

The United States has been stuck with a petrol-powered Tiguan, but increasing demand for diesel engines could force Volkswagen to offer a TDI variant.

Speaking with Automobile Magazine, VW product planner John Ryan revealed the model is under consideration but there are currently a few holdups. First and foremost, the current 2.0-liter TDI engine - that is offered in the Golf TDI and Jetta TDI - would have to be equipped with an expensive urea-based catalyst system to meet U.S. emission standards. While the company already uses that type of system on the Touareg TDI, the cost would make a Tiguan TDI prohibitively expensive.

Even those issues were resolved, strong TDI demand in Europe has pushed American availability to the backburner.

Despite the problems, Ryan hinted that Volkswagen might iron out the obstacles when the next-generation Tiguan is introduced in 2015.

TDI's get better fuel economy than any high-bred battery operated vehicles---just ask the question where does the energy come from to build these expensive batteries and then charge them on a regular basis! On top of that what is the life-span of the batteries and cost to the tax payers? It's also interesting that the government funded battery companies are filing bankruptcy now! Wow the people have been scammed----and people are driving and buying these cars and then they can't resell them---they are worth nothing! VW---TDI's are working in foreign countries and more and more people are getting the word here in the US! VW's are growing here and I hope it continues!

Why can they sell vw tdi's in the Jetta...etc but they can't in the Tiguan? Don't understand the hold ups! I'm a truck driver and the emission requirements are more destructive to the environment dropping mpg greatly on average 2-4 mpg on all truck models----meaning more fuel is being burned and if people think that with these emission controls no polution is kicked out in the atmosphere they're totally wrong!

So how can a small efficient diesel like this Tiguan not pass emmisions in this country but, a Cummins or Powerstroke three times its' size can?

Urea or not, they can keep it until they make it biodiesel compatible.
