Coupe and Cabriolet variants of this newly introduced 1-Series generation will be badged as the 2-Series

British magazine Autocar has the scoop on what BMW is planning in terms of variants for the just introduced new generation 1-Series.

According to the report, BMW will offer the 1-Series in a total of six different body variants divided into two different build architectures.

First up is the current 5-door, RWD hatchback which will also offer up a 3-door hatch variant next year (2012).

Next up will be where the big changes start. A two-door coupe and cabriolet, also RWD, will be launched but under the new 2-Series badge. No 4-door sedan variant is planned but the model will feature a new 3.0 liter turbocharged six-cylinder power plant with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

Finally, will come the variants built on a new FWD platform which will take the 1-Series into its next-generation as a mainly FWD model. In 2014, BMW will introduce the front-drive 1-Series GT and a 1-Series estate/wagon variants.

Autocar reports that the next generation of the 1-Series after that will come in around 2018/2019.

What a pathetic way to reach 100k sales per year, so each model only has to meet up to 20k sales quota. BMW is absolutely taking the hard way to do it. If only this design is heavily revised with influenced from 6 series and bespoke interior as found in Z4, the 1 series alone is potential disaster for BMW overall sales and brand image. Except they do discounting like Citroen in which BMW is rarely do except labelling all new car as near new and sell by 5 to 10k off (120i for the price of Golf 1.4TSi and Mazda 3 2.5). If they can't do the exterior, please get interior+space and powertrain right first. After I would never consider X1 to be worthy get BMW badge due to cheap interior material, I would expect the 1-series is also lacking the quality find in 5,7 or even 3-series. Rear space is a joke and only can be compared with Polo 3dr and even worse with wrong rear seats angle too straight. The last one that I hope BMW can do better is engine, 116d is laughable to CT200h owner while 116i is too weak compared with Golf 1.4TSI with 125kw, with this weight, 116d needs to get at least 103kw while 116i should be tuned for 115-120kw or similiar with 308 then 118i for the 147kw.

I really think you need to check most of your details.F20 interior based on Z4?? really. Have you sat in a Z4 and looked at the interior? Power comments, perhaps you need to check some side by sides before posting. Furthermore to comment the 1 series models against VW? How many versions of the Golf is there? 3dr, 5dr, Plus, Estate, Scirocco (golf coupe). It is entirely the same strategy.. a car for most peoples requirments. The looks of the car are "different" but so was the E60 5 series and had a similar reaction, now almost everybody loves it!

What I said was 1-series needs to get interior as good as Z4 to success, and I doubt this interior is enough to get point of luxury over new A3, new A-class and even next C30. The difference is Golf hatchback sales alone is easily far higher than entire 1-series + 2-series line up. In my argument, I already tend to emphasise my point to improving interior and engineering sector than exterior sector, with expectation this design by few months will be like normal car (conditional effect from BMW's recent design really works). Meanwhile, my comment for lack of power is true, with the same money as 116i, in Australia, you can get Guiletta Cloverleaf and GTi, so in order to compete really well, BMW has to at least cut the power gap, especially when golf R is just 10k from Golf GTi and means it is a rival for 118i with decent equipment (remember new model tends to be less-generous).

Clash_189, I do agree there is need of interior design improvement, but I find it stupid to actually compare 1 series to Golf. I am a Golf R owner, and I previously owned several BMWs too. Golf and 1 series are in the same car category, but they are not in the same price range. To compare 1 and golf directly based on price alone is not very reasonable. Same thing will happen if you put A3 and golf together too, in your theory, A3 will loss too.

Surely a 1 series estate can't be much different from the 5 door hatchback especially when there isn't a 4 door sedan. What is it? A long wheelbase version?

according to the article the 1 series 5 door hatch will remain RWD as will the new 2 series coupe and cabriolet that come off the same platform while the rest of the 1 series range will be FWD.

@ auto. Yes the difference is RWD vs FWD but my point was will they look different to justify the difference in names.

I think the differences between 1 hatch and touring will be similar to the differences between golf hatch and golf touring.

"BMW planning six variants for new 1-Series" how about making it good looking?

I just have a though that this ugly bit is planned to ask customers purchase the FWD version (must get different engineering structure and also different front and rear end as well the goodness we find in A3 and Golf but not 1-series, space) and then BMW has excuse to leave 1-series RWD version into bin

I'm not sure about the 1 GT either. With the lack of space in the current 1er and the slopping roofline, rear seat occupants may need to assume the feotal position just to fit.

i thought the lexus CT was a bad idea. Atleast the CT got the hybrid novelty to it, what does this one got other than a brand devaluating niche and its hideous appearance.

Bland, ugly, fugly, hideous, despicable and DOA - those should be the model names instead of the existing nomenclature.

No! no way! this car... is hideous. Perhaps not when compared to say, any similar sized car from GM or Chrysler, but when compared to its actual competitors it is f**k-ugly. Apart from looking fat and stupid, the lights and fascia are just plain wrong, they seriously look like a mistake. the lights and kidney grille do not integrate with each other at all, as a result there is this weird triangular-shaped blank space formed sort of between the light and the grille, that just looks like someone didn't know what to do with it. Am I the only one who sees this?

Yeah...OK. Is that how you measure everything? I don't really know if it's any better looking than the A3 design that's been around for 7 years....I still think not. But if you're referring to the new A3 then give yourself a shake.

The 4 door hatchback looks ugly, but I have faith that the other variants will look much nicer.

Why is the 5 door hatchback an RWD shouldn't it be FWD to increase interior space and the 3 door be RWD?

Pathetic....and technically wrong. You can't just create 2 other variants for the 1 Series (which looks like an A segment car) and then declare it as a totally different model and call it the 2 Series (which is suppose to be a B segment car). This is truly pathetic...especially for a premium automaker like BMW...Sad..Very Sad Indeed.

I think for styling, price reliability, I would rather have a Mazda 3 hatchback and pocket the difference.
