Renault Samsung SM7 revealed [video]

SM7 may make it to Europe as a new Renault flagship

Shortly after its introduction as a concept model at the at the Seoul Motor Show, the first official images of the production Renault-Samsung SM7 have been released.

Looking like a toned-down version of the concept car, the SM7 is reportedly built on the D platform which also underpins the Nissan Maxima / Nissan Teana (JDM). Engine options will likely include a 2.5-liter V6 with 182 hp (136 kW / 185 PS) and 232 Nm (171 lb-ft) of torque as well as a 3.5-liter V6 that develops 251 hp (187 kW / 254 PS) and 335 Nm (247 lb-ft) of torque.

The Korean-market SM7 may also just make it to Europe too as a new flagship Renault model. The French automaker is said to be considering adding the SM7 to its lineup under the possible name Safrane.

Renault Samsung Motors reveals the brand new SM7

  • On June 13, 2011, Renault Samsung Motors released images of the definitive design of New SM7, its latest large, prestige sedan for the Korean market.
  • In addition to its generous exterior dimensions, New SM7's original lines exude the sort of elegance and comfort that is only associated with refined luxury. The racy front-end styling expresses power and confidence, while the rear end suggests a spacious interior and large boot. The bold design of the two exhaust tailpipes leaves little doubt concerning the performance characteristics of the engines that will be available for the model.
  • This brand new sedan is poised to supersede Renault Samsung Motors' current top-of-the-range model. Based on a technical package acclaimed for its strength and efficiency, it benefits extensively from the Alliance's input in these areas. New SM7 combines exemplary driving pleasure with the very latest technologies to deliver an exceptional sense of wellbeing and genuine quality.
  • New SM7 is very similar to the concept car which was revealed at the Seoul Motor Show at the beginning of April. It is due to go on sale in Korea before the end of the year.

In addition to boasting the most generous exterior dimensions of its class, the latest-generation SM7 combines bold, striking lines with an unmistakable sense of refinement and elegance. The front end is built around a single-structured grille flanked by the original gaze of the car's adaptive and directional bi-Xenon headlights. The character line and chrome trimming add further to the implicit sense of dynamism and quality. The generous forms continue rearward, forming a spacious cabin in which everything will be devoted to motoring enjoyment and the exclusive wellbeing of its occupants. Meanwhile, the bold twin exhaust tail-pipes point to the quality and performance credentials of the engines that will be available for the car.

New SM7 benefits extensively from the expertise of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, from its original design to the high standard of after-sales service quality customers will be able to expect. Developed from the New SM5 base, it will stand out as a new benchmark in Korea's large sedan market, while its plush comfort, silent ride, precise chassis and high-performance engines all promise to be convincing arguments. The reputation for quality and reliability currently enjoyed by Renault Samsung Motors has naturally been carried over to New SM7 which packs Alliance-derived features assembled in keeping with the group's exacting standards.

This refined, luxuriously-appointed sedan will sit at the top of the brand's rejuvenated, structured new range. The near-definitive model was shown for the first time as a concept car at the Seoul Motor Show in April, while its interior will be revealed just before it goes on sale in Korea in the second half of the year.

Rear profile is sexy yet bold which is nicely done, front bumper and grill are horribly inspired by VW group for China market. After I came and saw Renault version for Latitude, interior is way to go, it doesn't resemble quirky Renault or neat Nissan Teana/Maxima, but many buttons and controls are positioned without considering aesthetic design. Really wish this one will get enough interior design treatment to compete with Saab 9-5 and S80 (the latitude's interior is hopeless to get over Superb)

why is it called Samsung? Very simple answer: this car brand WAS a Samsung brand... they've produced cars under Mazda license if I remember well, because this was happening a long time ago... and when the Daewoo was bought by GM, Samsung decided to sell their car division to Renault (that period was a difficult period for almost all Korean car producers). After that Renault kept the name and produced cars only for the local market... until now. So, it's very simple

listen grey, samsung is not some cheap electronic company (the fact that they have some factories in china? maybe, yes. but everyone has at least one factory in china: apple, asus, acer, dell, nikon, sony..you name it). this car (or its electronics) is developed in colaboration with samsung; or smthing like that. i had the same dilema when it was first posted...few months ago. somneone, a user, from wcf, kindly explained to me. regardless the name: (1) dont worry, the car wont be names Samsung in europe. (2) samsung isnt cheap; they have some of the best electronics (not to mention the best freaking smartphones, Galaxy S and Galaxy S II. the later being and incredible dual core smartphone.

Samsung isn't the worst electronics/appliance brand, but it's pretty darned close. Apex is worse.

lemme guess ur a korean huh? Samsung is the hyundai of electronics. The hyundais had came a long way but nobody other than blue collar people will be caught dead in one. The Samsung phones that u mentioned is decent because they got droid os, their previous phone without it are mediocre at best! I had one (free replacement from att) drop calls, constant reboot, etc! Anyhow it is a brilliant move by Renault by marketing it as a Renault instead of a nissan since you korean hates universally hate the japanese justifiably due history. but to name it the samsung wtf next there will be Renault Sony, IBM, RCA, Hagen Daz? lmao u still didnt answer my question why did they name it after some electronic company? A cheap one at it hahahaha

I liked the overall exterior design - large, stately, camry-esque fascia and unique rims. It is good that Samsung is progressing nicely with a new design direction, instead of "pass-me-down" Nissan design influence.

Since you guys know so much about phones I assume you know that the Iphone 4 and Ipad 1/2 are all samsung electronics. They also make the best microprocessors for things like calculators/cellphones. I mean the only two out there are Qualcomm and TI both are FAR behind what Samsung is putting out right now, 1.2GHZ dual core in the palm of your hand and graphics to rival the PSP and 1gb of RAM, i mean 5 years ago that was a top of the line laptop. I wouldn't be surprised if most car ECUs already use Samsung chips. Grey: Don't complain about quality of a free phone, that's like complaining about quality of a TATA 2500$ car....Also Samsung is far from cheap, go on the Hong-Kong website and see what they have available in Asia, they have shit you will see stateside in 2 years. If you think a Samsung series 9 LED tv is cheap then you must be loaded. I'd buy Samsung over Sony any day, sony has been slipping, other than the PS3 they don't have the top product in any market, be it quality, or customer satisfaction. Just wiki Samsung and you'll see they make MANY different things and have 31x the net income of SONY. They make escavators, ships, oil platforms. They make robots and heavy machinery, who knows maybe the factory is all samsung equipment, maybe samsung wants to get into the car market and joint ventures with renault on this car. Samsung isn't only a television maker or cellphone maker, just like Hitachi and Toshiba, they make 50 million different things all the way from your free cellphone to the mobile sea satellite launch platform and rockets that put the satellite your AT&T runs on.

yes yes we can google up all the tentacles of what each company does that's not of the obvious (for gods sake mitsubishi makes canned tuna lol) but anyhow if u want to dig deep into electronic component make up of devices, i bet your iphone or whatever you are wielding have quite a few components made by no name chinese companies hmm shall we put them in the same category as samsung as well? lol funny how the free yet latest phone from samsung keep messing up but the free replacement for the samsung replacement - an old moto razer worked flawlessly! no complain there! lol i gotta admit that samsung lcd screens do have great picture quality (mostly thank to their dynamic contrast function) for the price but then again why are people buying bmw 3 series while they can get the same speed out of an Altima? ;-)
