2010 Lincoln MKT

MKS & MKT facelift set to debut in L.A.

Lincoln is in the midst of a 'fancy Ford' identity crisis, so the brand has revealed plans to unveil seven new or updated models in the coming years.

To kick things off, Lincoln will introduce the facelifted MKS and MKT at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. The brand is going for an understated appearance so we're hoping the MKT will lose the toothy grille.

More interestingly, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Ford product chief Derrick Kuzak said "You think of BMW as engaging to drive; you can think of Lexus as refined. Bring them together and it is a new experience no customer has ever had." That sounds rather promising, but we'll believe when we see it.

I think he described a Jaguar or Maserati. Ford should have euthanized Lincoln and kept Volvo as it's premium brand. Lincoln coming up to Lexus' standards would be an amazing feat...meeting BMW standards is even further away.

I did not know "engaging" and "refined" are mutually exclusive.

Lincoln needs to drop those stupid acronyms first of all regardless of the great pride they my get in honoring those lame Mark 8's (thumps down). Second, a car should not be defined by a whale toothed grill; that's all I see when viewing any Lincoln. Third, when I think of BMW or Lexus, I don't think of Lincoln. What ever it is they are promising, this will never happen. Sorry Lincoln, just stick to what you do best: reaching in the pockets of senior citizens.

They could do it, if they really have the fortitude and commitment. They can't do it with FWD-V6 platforms. You can already get leather and full power everything in a Ford. Why pay more to get the same platform with a Lincoln badge with leather and full power everything. RWD seems to be a must if you are gunning for BMW. So is a premium engine layout, i.e one that doesn't settle for many pounds of balance shafts in order to be built cheaply while not shaking itself apart. Ford is on a roll and should be able to invest in Lincoln. They could use the new global mustang platform, if there really is going to be one, and put in engines which are up-line and really do something. Ford and Lincoln people do seem to be talking out of both sides of their mouth. A few weeks ago the brand was going to go head to head against Acura.

Totally agree ... in fact I had to do a quick check that April Fools Day hadn't come around again ... this is a complete joke, sadly Ford USA don't seem to have learned anything from what happened around the GFC.

I don't see this ever happening, Cadillac is having trouble fitting into the conversation with the likes of BMW and Lexus, and it is miles ahead of Lincoln right now...

This will happen just fine. Ford builds top world cars such as the Fiesta, Focus, Mondeo, C-Max, S-Max, and Galaxy. Now that Ford USA can build world cars in America, making Lincoln into luxury class world cars will be easy. All the bad American designers have been taken out of action.

Not sure if this could happen, but would love to be surprised by it actually happening. This one will be a LONG road to go though, and would be one of the hugest transformations in automotive history.

Yeah right - and the MKT will win the Indy 500 and the Monaco Grand Prix next year.

Ford failed to do anything sensible with Jaguar while they had the chance. What makes them think they may be able to do something sensible with Lincoln? Their Lincoln models to date are little more than a bad joke.

My wife bought a MKX a couple of years ago - other than a Viper our first American made car in over 25 years. It has been a delight and the dealer service has been superb, 110% better than on her 535. For us Chrysler (or whatever their name is) has long been out of the picture, I won't consider a GM product after last week's speech by CEO Akerson advocating raising the gas tax by $1.00, so if I want to buy "American" - which I do - it's going to be a Ford product.

Lincoln is ripe for the retro treatment the Mustang received. Seeing as we are hitting the last days of behemoth vehicles (HOPEFULLY!) with rising fuel costs and depletion of resources, they should do a last tribute to the iconic suicide doored sedans of the 60's in a modern yet elegant form. Competing apples against oranges is pointless and not identifying the demographic that the Lincoln name represents historically.

Why does everyone think that there is only one approach to luxury. Everyone thinks they have to be just like BMW. What ever happened to American luxury? Cadillac is trying to go up against BMW and AMG but why would I buy a Cadillac that is just an imitation of a BMW when I can just buy the genuine article. The idea about a modern version of the suicide door Lincoln of the 60's is a great idea. Only once you have done that then what? American car companies need to differentiate themselves by being more American not more German and market American luxury better.

@ zot959; I'm afraid that ship has sailed, Ford has already made the transition to europonize their line-up, and their adamant on change. Not that I don't agree with you, it would be impossible to erase 100 years of a brand's proud history just to switch from American to German. Change is a necessity though, the "fancy Ford" idea is long in the tooth; instead, Lincoln should adopt a style that's distinctive (unlike their 70s-90s models) but not flashy (unlike today's Lincolns), like the 30s Zephyr or the Mk ll Continental. Quality is top priority, which is a something Lincoln has lacked for quite sometime; so long that it's pounded into our impressions of their cars. In order to defeat this Ford has to take a financial hit and put exceeding attention to their cars (to the point of ridiculousness (think polished aluminum trunk hinges)), to prove their commitment to the brand. Think of it as an investment that costs today, but benefits tomorrow. Lastly, they need to sell the car, not the cheap novelty in car refrigerators and back-up cameras, but a car that doesn't need these tricks to impress the driver. It's obvious when a car brand thinks of the driver over the profits, BMW has done it, Cadillac is just starting to, and it's the only thing that will convince us of Lincoln's enlightenment.

What has Cadillac really done? Raise their prices higher than Mercedes/Audi/BMW and still are pieces of crap. Change is not something very hard to achieve, look at Apple pre-ipod and iphone era, they were on the verge of bankruptcy and made cheap plastic computers that looked like 1960s television sets. They went from that to being one of the top quality hardware designers. What about Hyundai? Look at the Genesis sedan, can't beat it for 50k fully loaded with the V8, it puts the Cadillac DTS to shame. It's about a mentality, and Ford and GM can't compete, even if they become copy cats like Lexus was when it first came out and reverse engineer BMWs they may be on-par today but what about tomorrow? American mentality is not the same as German or Japanese, those guys dream about work and about how to improve what they built. I mean look at Germany, completely destroyed in WW2 and ever since they have been climbing economically and infrastructure wise, the opposite can be said about North America, they were filthy rich after WW2 and they have just been throwing that $ away and living off their visa. I mean look at the "fastest" american built car, the Hennessey GT, they took a lotus elise, some tube piping and strapped a turbo viper engine...Now look at the Veyron, the thing is built like an F-35 fighter jet. The Americans want the benefits of "change" but without actually changing. They elected Obama because of his promises of change, and then when it came to actually voting on change they decided to stay the same. Anyone who knows anything about psychology, people that talk about something aren't sure about what they are saying. People that are don't talk about changing, they just go and do it.
