GM wants to sell Opel - report
Opel Corsa OPC N?rburgring Edition 09.05.2011

Volkswagen rumored as a possible suitor

In the midst of bankruptcy, GM announced plans to sell Opel to Magna International. The company later reversed that decision, but a new report is indicating Opel may once again be headed to the auction block.

According to German newspaper Der Spiegel, GM is growing tired of Opel's mounting losses and isn't convinced that the brand is integral to their operations.  That's not much to go off of, but the newspaper is also reporting that leading suitors include Volkswagen and unnamed Chinese automakers.

While the reports are interesting, we're taking them with a heavy dose of skepticism. It's true that Chevrolet and Cadillac are going to play a larger international role, but GM CEO Dan Akerson recently confirmed that regional brands - like Opel and Holden - will continue to play an important role in the company's future. In addition, Opel CEO Karl-Friedrich Stracke dismissed the reports as "mere speculation" from "competitors who want to distract from the fact that we are successful in the market again."

I really don't understand GM. Opel is the only brand in the whole General Motors Corporation which is producing really good quality cars. All the financial problems of GM are because of american brands .. even the americans don't wanna buy those big cars with petrol engines of the previous century ..

I'm surprised Opel is making losses, as I see so many new Astras and Insignias on the road. Plus, isn't Buick loaning all their new models as their lineup? I wouldn't really call this fact non-integral to operations.

Thank you very much WCF for not using this story as another excuse to post a picture of the unfortunate and awkwardly designed Insomnia.

Opel making losses? Not sure about that but GM may want to push it's US brands more but to whom? Maybe a miskate since most markets sell European cars but lack the American flavour. Or maybe they overate their Transformers marketing...

I just don't understand some of your comments. Opel is losing money it was reported by several car mags and news reports. None of the Europeans can stand the fact Opel is owned by the Americans...and since it's not consistently profitable 1) sell it to a Chinese company like Ford did with Volvo and walk away with cash. 2) merge with Saab and a Chinese automaker and maybe produce a company that might survive or 3) Fiat & Chrysler may be interested in buying Opel...

...or sell it to the Indians, as Ford did with Land Rover and Jaguar, and now regret it as LR/ Jaguar turned in a nice profit under Indian stewardship!

It would be great to see the Koreans purchase Opel that might inject some flavors to both products as we have seen the successful Nissan-Renault marriage. Hyundai/Kia needs a strong European presence while Opel needs larger market exposure on the emerging markets. Well it is safer to deal and go Korean than Chinese or Fiat.

Opel should just merge with Saab and become the under achieving delinquent in the class room.

ONCE THE BEES DIE ... HUMANITY THEN ONLY HAS *FOUR MORE YEARS* TO LIVE; that applies aldo to GM, if GM sells Opel that would happen to them, Opel is an amazing quality cars producer, high technology cars producer, please do not tell me that GM's American brands are as well accepted worldwide as Opel is! It's impossible to compare a (cheap looking and poor quality) Chevrolet to a GERMAN, well assembled, high quality, eco friendly, high tech OPEL.

Brazil: Chevrolets are Opel?s with new logo. China: Buick uses Opel?s with new logos to sell good cars and make lot of money. Then, they really make money out of opel, but just put in the paper the "Opel" sales to say it loose money. Did we need to take the completely picture numbers of Opel models rebadged? I think it?s because political and tax reasons that they do this, charging Opel with the cost of development to go in red numbers, and then go to Brazil, USA or china, change the logo and get profit out of it. I call this: playing with taxes and benefits in a dark way.

What I mean is that there are "Legal" numbers and "Real" ones. in real ones Opel is making a lot of money to GM.

the only problem with what you say is that the platforms are owned and belong to GM. Opel is owned and belongs to GM. Just like Toyota and VW, platforms are shared within the group to lower cost and improve profits. The GM platform that underpins Opel models is a good platform and sells well counting volume with GM's other divisions such as Buick. Opel will be profitable this year and it's a good company...but stop blaming GM because people don't buy enough Opels to make the company profitable. I like Saab as well but they are in the same boat... Put your money where you mouth is and buy an Opel that might help...

I'm also surprised Opel makes a loss. If GM sell Opel they can kiss goodbye to european sales, no-one in europe buys american cars bar Fords (and they are seen as special european versions) Even if Chevrolets were good people wouldnt buy them because of the reputation american cars have here- poor economy, poor handling, poor build-quality and poor design

And with Opel is soon coming to aussie, then in the next 5 years, next gen Holden Cruze which is in fact current model is still Astra sibling, will have to be really good to compete with really different Opel Astra. At the moment, GM also don't have good mid size car and I doubt Malibu will serve as Insignia replacement very well

I think what may happen is that we could see China's Shanghai Automotive Industries Corporation (SAIC) buy a large fraction of Opel/Vauxhall (probably as much as 50%), which will allow a larger range of GM models to be sold in China. Also, it means in the future we'll see a larger range of Opel models sold worldwide, including the possibility we could finally see the Meriva and Zafira MPV's finally arrive in the US market, possibly including hybrid drivetrain versions.
