Mercedes-Benz baby SLS - new details
Baby SLS model, the SLC, will rival the Porsche 911 and feature more than a baby-like 500 HP
New details are emerging on the upcoming Mercedes-Benz 'baby SLS'.
This time German car magazine Auto Bild is reporting that the so-called SLC will sport up to 500 PS (368 kW / 493 bhp) and be positioned as an arch-rival to the Porsche 911.
For reasons of cost, the SLC would lose the gullwing doors of the larger SLS AMG model, and an entry-level model with around 350 PS (257 kW / 345 bhp) will cost less than €100,000.
Auto Bild says there are two scenarios for the SLC - one is an introduction of its own in 2014. The other is that the model becomes a successor to the SLS and replaces it in 2016.

Basically kills the SL in it's current form/function unless new SL comes only with the V6 and small V8. But Merc will end up with a big V8 AMG anyway so it maybe 3 Mercs gunning for the 911 range.

There is no way this car will kill the SL in it's current form. The SL is not a rival to the 911. It is a sports tourer with a retractable hardtop, not a hardcore lightweight track machine like the 911. It is the most iconic 2 seater convertible on the market. Yo don't mess with a formula like that no matter what other models you introduce.

naah... the sl was never a 911 rival... it's heavy and is more like a dragster.. but the 500 hp .. i dont know if they can hold against the 911's 530 hp.. i mean the 911 turbo gets to 62mph in 3.2 .. don't know if the folks at daimler are aware of that.. if it can't beat the 911 in a drag then it won't beat it at anything

I think that SLC will be the successor of SLS....5.5 V8 Biturbo with 650hp will be inside!

Iam torn about this. I love the SLS and have a SL63. What keeps me out the SLS is the fact its not a good car for people over six feet tall and you almost need a tow truck to get in and out of it. I am wanting a new benz, like the new SLK, but its not my SL... and am tired of waiting for the new body SL to come out. So Iam torn. Never really been a porsche fan so no loss there. Also love the SLS roadster, but wondering how hard it will be to get in and out of with top up. YES ADCAR WAS RIGHT,the SL is for retired old people, except for Iam about 25 years from being old or retired and The SL is not for the economically Challenged.

So this gonna be lighter and has 500 hp which mean it may be even faster than the SLS

Mercedes is wasting its time trying to go up against the 911. I am expecting a massive improvement for the upcoming 911. SL SLC & SLS are just too many models I cannot see it working. Most likely the SLC will replace the SLS.

i agree it wont beat a 911 around a racetrack but who cares because the noise of an AMG engine is what you call soul, i have driven an SLS and a 911 and i must admit the SLS is the best car i have driven, but i loved them both

The SL and 911 are just different animals. The current model scores very high in driving pleasure and is more practical than the 911. While you do see low mileage SLs for sale near retirees, I also know some 911s owned by more mature drivers.
But this Photoshop "Baby SLS" looks like something out of a Betty Boop comic strip. Clearly, it is not a 911 competitor, and that's where Porsche has been so brilliant, they have a thoroughly modern classic that they've developed over time. It's not that there haven't been classic SLs, they just haven't evolved via a more stodgy punctuated equilibrium.
