Honda Performance Development division will display the CR-Z at the 24hr Le Mans endurance race

Honda will be taking this CR-Z Racer to Le Mans but the car will not compete in the 24hr endurance race there.

The car will be a part of a display put up at the historic racing event called "Le Mans vers le Futur" (Le Mans towards the future) but the CR-Z Racer will run a few demonstration laps around the track.

The CR-Z Racer is a creation of Honda Performance Development, a division of Honda USA. It is a FWD hybrid vehicle powered by a 1.5 liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol/gasoline unit coupled to an electric motor fitted between the engine and the 6-speed manual gearbox. The electric motor is fed juice from a 7 kWh/173 volt lithium-ion battery. Total output is 200 PS (147 kW / 197 bhp) and 237 Nm (175 lb-ft) of torque.

The Honda Performance Development CR-Z racer did compete in the 2010 Thunderhill 25 Hours race in Napa, California in December of last year.

At this year's Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race, Honda's CR-Z hybrid coupe will feature in a special exhibition ("Le Mans vers le Futur") looking at the future of the legendary event.

The organisers of Le Mans 24 Hours, the ACO (Automobile Club de l'Ouest), is committed to making its world famous event more sustainable and so for the second year is organising a special exhibition called "Le Mans vers le Futur" devoted to showcasing the Le Mans racing cars of the future.

The displayed cars, including the CR-Z hybrid coupe, will also run demonstration laps around the track, driven by famous drivers before the start of the official race.

The CR-Z in competition livery

Honda, which pioneered the mass production of hybrid cars, first unveiled a competition version of its hybrid coupe at last year's SEMA Show in Las Vegas. The car was developed by Honda Performance Development (HPD), the "racing arm" of American Honda. Shortly afterwards it was entered into its first race, finishing second in its class at Thunderhill 25 Hours, a circuit near San Francisco.

HPD has developed the car to be tested in real race conditions to discover technical solutions specific to hybrids.

In Europe, the CR-Z Racer is used as a pace car as part of Speed ??EuroSeries (www.speedeuroseries.com).

Looking forward to the Spoon GT300 CRZ !! Btw, does the motor actually generate / recover enough energy to charge the battery during race conditions ? I was wondering if it would only do so when a driver lifts off the throttle and "glide" towards a corner. Hope that these motorsport contributions are positive to advancements in Honda's cars !
