BMW leads rivals in global premium sales
2012 BMW 1-Series, 1600, 06.06.2011

The BMW brand's global sales volume is up 19.2 percent for the first five months of 2011 compared to the same period last year

BMW is leading the 2011 race for the best-selling global premium brand, breezing past its fellow German rivals with a 19 percent increase in sales for the month of May.

The BMW brand sold 121,168 vehicles worldwide in May while Audi sold 113,400 and Mercedes-Benz 108,766 units.

Audi too saw its May 2011 sales rise by 19.5 percent over the same period last year but that wasn't enough to catch its arch-competitor BMW and Audi has to settle for second place.

For the first five months of 2011, the BMW brand holds the lead in global sales with a total of 555,429 units sold, an increase of 19.2 percent over the same period last year. The Bavarian brand's volume was boosted by fresh and popular products such as the X1 compact SUV, the X3 SUV and the 5-Series.

Audi sold 535,400 units for 2011 up to the end of May, up 17.5 percent over 2010. Mercedes-Benz sold a total of 490,021 units for the first five months of 2011, a rise of 10.5 percent over 2010.

The news is good for the German auto industry as a whole, with very healthy rises in sales for all three of the country's top premium brands. But BMW is the automaker making the best of the friendly global environment, especially in China, where its May sales were up an amazing 51.1 percent over last year.

These top German premium car makers are on their own league. Well done BMW! It really shows that the company really does put a lot of soul in its car with pure driving involvement and stirs emotion. I shall look forward for next year's new 3-Series.

So in other words 555,429 people love ugly cars. I'm sorry, I can never buy a BMW. Apart from the bad rep their drivers' have (the euro equivalent to Honda drivers), I find their cars soulless, and every new model release is either butt ugly or a conservative let down over its predecessor. Yea everyone raves about the brilliant handling, but how often can that be enjoyed with urban sprawl and ubiquitous traffic congestion. Plus you gotta look at the thing everytime you have to drive it *sick.... I much rather have a car I look back at when I'm done driving it

Well, that's your opinion. I own a BMW and I enjoy every bit of my Bimmer. Design, engine and handling is unique and can never be matched by some wannabe premium brand like Audi. Plus, kinda jerk rep of drivers is now Audi's business.

Audi even has the down market A1(POLO) to boost sales figures. If you include Mini the gap would be much larger.

I don't know what the hell are you people talking about but I haven't seen a new BMW in months that wasn't an xdrive. All the talk about handling means nothing to a regular every day driver which sees that the car isn't drivable in the winter. Sales people push buyers for xdrive telling them that audis won't pass them in the snow. At least that is what my sales guy did and I told him that this was a cheapest shot any sales guy ever took and I went to other dealership. What a joke.

Wow, i expected a few butthurt posters and hey presto they arrive just on time. Why not save your dummy spitting, tantrum throwing shenanigans for another topic and give credit where credit is due. BMW is setting the benchmark for all other premiums to follow. Guess successful people of all races and cultures the world over love 'ugly' cars. Get over it.

I enjoy cars, I have a 07 Aston Martin convertible, 08 Maserati Gran Turismo, 05 Lamborghini Gallardo and a BMW 335 convertible. I enjoy driving the BMW the most. For a daily driver, the handling, brakes everything is perfect. I did a 2 day BMW M course and ran the crap out of the cars but they wanted more. I have had a 6 and a 5 series before but the 3 is really fun because of its size and weight. BMW is usually at the forefront of new engine technology

If BMW finally introduces a R-class model, then the sales can even up by 100% in China (I don't live there) and other Asia market (used to live in one of them). Look people, R-class my not your cup of tea with its MPV body, but compared with Japanese lux MPV, R-class apparently not bad at all and has the most choice of engine. 7 seater SUV like GL and LX are also not a default choice with 4WD will get high tax due to you know emission and bulky but not that spacious inside. With the new 2.0l turbo and 1.6l turbo and output between 170hp to 230hp, that should be sufficient enough for pulling the car and compete with next gen R250.

A Best Seller Does not mean that you are the Best in The market! Let's see how Mercedes gets this first place after their upcoming launches (ML, C Class Coupe, S Class) those cars would rule!!

S class sales won't effect the over all figure too much as it is the top of range model, ML will help a little, but C Class won't stand a chance next year as the new 3 series will hit the market early next year. (3 series will always dominate the market.)

Most of the BMW cars are not very nice looking, 1 series for example and the facelift model for next year is still ugly. Red/orange dials and bland interior. The order of most car sold will change when the other makers release new models.
