2012 Mercedes M-Class officially unveiled [videos]

Following a leak earlier today, Mercedes has officially unveiled the 2012 M-Class.

Set to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this year, the redesigned crossover has an evolutionary design that is instantly recognizable as an M-Class. Notable highlights include a prominent front grille, sculpted sides, wraparound taillights and 17- to 21-inch alloy wheels, with the largest rims getting the AMG badge.

While the exterior styling is slightly déjà vu, the cabin has been significantly improved with higher quality materials and an enhanced design. The dashboard draws inspiration from the S-Class and features a wide swatch of wood trim. Elsewhere, there's a wider center console, aluminum accents, an updated COMAND system and an optional panoramic sunroof.

At launch, three different engines will be offered. The entry-level ML 250 Bluetec has a 2.1-liter four-cylinder diesel that produces 204 PS (150 kW / 201 hp) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque.

Moving up to the ML 350 Bluetec rewards drivers with a 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine with 258 PS (190 kW / 254 hp) and 457 lb-ft (619 Nm) of torque. Early speculation is that the engine will allow the driver to sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) in about 7.5 seconds before topping out at 224 km/h (139 mph).

Lastly, if you're a petrol fan, the ML 350 BlueEfficiency has a 3.5-liter V6 engine that develops 306 PS (225 kW / 302 hp) and 273 lb-ft (370 Nm) of torque. This model will be able to race all the way up to 235 km/h (146 mph), though its sprint time is slightly slower.

Regardless of what powertrain is selected, all engines are paired to a 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system.

In terms of handling, all models come equipped with a selective damping suspension. Customers can also order an Airmatic self-leveling air suspension and an Active Curve System with dynamic roll stabilization.

Of course, since this is a Mercedes, the crossover can be outfitted with all the latest technology. Options include Night View Assist Plus (with pedestrian recognition), Speed Limit Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Active Park Assist and Distronic Plus - just to name a few.

The 2012 Mercedes M-Class will be launched this fall, but pricing information is still pending. Look for more images and further details to drop here at WCF.

I've never been a fan of the M-class. This evolution design is indeed good looking, and interior is very nice. Well done MB.

Indeed. I am not an SUV fan myself, but the new M-class looks distinctively a Mercedes, that it has that "Unimog" feel to it. Don't ask me about whether there is relevance to that hard-core heavy duty truck, but IMO, it looks kind of like that. Perhaps, it should be called "Minimog."

In my opinion, the interior is fantastic! Finally looks like a proper Mercedes, and doesn't look dated or overly stylized as do some of the recent MB offerings. Eh, the exterior... I will have to see it in person and see how the proportions work out. Might take me a while on this one before I can make a judgement.

Seems like a possible case of one step forward (interior) and two steps back (exterior). I guess they are trying to lend some boxiness to it's shape. Hopefully it looks a little more inspiring on the road than it does in the photos. Rear lights are fail IMO. Kinda looks Ford Explorer-ish.

The interior is amazing but i'm sure this diamond stitching is a designo package the whole interior design is nice, while the exterior is 50% done. The rear doesn't look good but the front with the AMG package looks beautiful and better looking than the Cayenne. Waiting for the AMG monster to arrive soon.

I much prefer the previous M-Class, I would have to think twice between choosing that and the X5, but this doesn't look good to me at all, very incohesive design. Mix between Lexus and SsangYong IMO

Is it hard to design a car today??? First the BMW 1-series, now this... Or is it, "you just can't find the staff anymore?"

Evolution not revolution here. Still I'd say its the best looking in its segment. Really sharp looking, like a taylored suit. Love the tail lights! a little reminiscent of the w220?

Sitting on the same platform as the new Jeep Grand Cherokee, I think that the Jeep designers did a better job overall. Whatever you do, DONT show your new ML a gravel road - it may just dump all its fluids all over the road!

Front is rather reminiscent of current CL while the rear looks like the current E wagon.
