Near production-ready Model S Alpha features new design cues over previous prototype

Tesla Motors has unveiled a near production-ready Model S Alpha.

The car's design has evolved over the last prototype that was made public and features a new front bumper and larger front air intakes.

The Tesla S Alpha is slated to go to production next year with the first batch of cars coming off the line in the second half of 2012. Deliveries will begin in mid-2012 in North America and later in the year for Europe.

The car will come in 3 main variants which differ in range. The most expensive, the Model S 300M which costs approximately $77,400, having the largest battery pack with a range of approximately 300 miles (483 km).

Cheaper variants with less range will also be offered - the 230M (230 miles/307 km) and 160M (160 miles/258 km) - each costing around $10,000 less than the next longer-range model.

wow, thats really good looking. If Tesla can make it another year, and if this product can match-up to the Karma and Volt, should be a hit. Im not holding my breath...

id like to ask how long does it take to charge the battery when its empty and where will it be done? at home or will the gas stations be prepared with special stations?

Tesla early on stated a full charge on a quick charger would take 45 minutes, I don' t know if that changed. Stations aren't really needed for electric cars, companies like Best Buy and McDonald's have started installing chrargers in their parking lots, so in the near future it's more likely that you'll be getting charged at your destinations, though level 3 quick chargers will be found at charging stations. Though supposedly Tesla has developed a quick charger for your home for their cars.

Well if Fisker is still penning designs for Tesla, the Aston comments may be warranted as he once designed for them.

Great looking, but according to what I have seen so far, I'd go for the Fisker Karma.

Beautiful car! Reminds me a mix of Jaguar, Aston Martin, Maserati and Peugeot 508. And I guess for that money is a good value.

Comparing to Fisker Karma which looks quite controversial, Tesla has made a really nice looking sportback.

Originality lasts longer than plagiarism; as undoubtedly attractive as this hybrid car is, it's a design hybrid.

You are aware its a full electric car not a hybrid right? And I think the design is unique to Tesla, just because it reminds you of other designs doesn't mean it's plagiarized.
