Nissan Leaf a bust in the US?
Sales projection slashed
The Nissan Leaf was recently named the World Car of the Year, but that doesn't seem to be helping sales in the United States.
According to Automotive News, the company has slashed their original sales projection of 20,000 units to just 10,000 to 12,000 units for 2011. Nissan declined to cite a reason for the move, but the Japanese earthquake has disrupted vehicle production. However, there's also the possibility that consumers aren't ready to accept a 100 mile (161 km) range.
Regardless, it has to be a little discouraging when fuel prices are near all-time highs but only 46 percent of consumers who reserved a car are actually taking delivery.

I have tried to lease one but hard to fine. It is a perfect around town car and if I need to leave town I usually fly. Besides saving money on gas, the car is practically no maintenance.

this really won't work in california where commuters takes an average drive of 100 miles per day or maybe more. i really hate EV cars because they are useless. but for me EV cars should be limited only for downtown cars like NY or Chicago. Can't go to the country side with this.

I only drive around 50mil/day but still I wouldn't go for this thing. No 1 - its ugly. No 2 - 100 miles is too limited. IF I would consider an EV I would go for the Volt, handsome and capable -although still expensive for a Chevy medium size car.

the charger would run on the drivers lack of brain function and sensibility.

yeah, as a fellow New Yorker, i have no intention on getting a car that i have no place to plug in because i live in an apartment building, they are no charging stations of that i know of, a car that can only go just so far until u have to recharge it again, i love to be engaged in driving, not just cruising along, and i love driving outside of the city and have extremely long trips upstate. the Nissan Leaf doesn't fit my lifestyle and i'm pretty sure it wouldn't fit more than 80% of the rest of the U.S. sorry nissan, until u could get that car to recharge in 1 minute, drive for over 650 miles on one charge, be sporty and have a better style and driving experience, THEN i'll be there with a check, but right now in 2011, electric cars aren't something to get used to yet, they need to be perfected first.

as a perfect candidate to own a Leaf, the weird exterior design with no style kills it!

Aside from the fact that Nissan's design dept is smoking crack, you have to "rent" the charger that goes with the Leaf for $50/month indefinitely. You can't buy one. I guess their marketing dept is smoking crack too...

It just debuted this year, give it time. Though I do agree, if car companies want people to get interested in electric cars the least they could do is make them look good. And the Leaf is a bit of a toad in the looks department.

Let's face it. A hundred miles range is impressive for a pure electric car. But still is not enough for most people driving customs. I think this is a good car for someone who commutes to a mall or a grocery store from home, I mean, someone who makes 20 or 30 miles.

I think the Nissan Leaf's failure so far is proof that they really must tremendously expand the range of the vehicle--maybe to 200 miles--to make it decently viable.
This is why the Toyota Prius has been such a success--while it's not a true electric vehicle, the Prius can go easily well over 400 miles per fillup if driven reasonably, which makes it a very viable daily driving vehicle. And with improved battery technology, a Prius maybe 3-4 years from now could go over 700 miles on a single fillup, thanks to the use of higher-density lithium-ion or ultracapacitor batteries.

thats right! and the new Prius Plug in will be even better! i like the idea of a pure electric car, the actual range technologie isn't good enought!

Regardless of it's technology, this car is just not attractive to me. BTW, I commute 100 miles a day, that's not really a turn on for me either.

Interesting, and GM has had to increase Volt production because of demand hmmm. The world is not ready for purely electric.

It's the stupid dealers fault. I looked into getting one and the dealers want $5,000 premium for them. I can buy a Honda Fit for the half the price and put 20 years of gas at $5.00 a gallon and still be cheaper then a priced gouging Leaf.
