BMW may take the title in U.S. premium sales after a decade of dominance by Lexus

BMW has widened its lead in U.S. market premium sales.

The Bavarian brand's May sales were up 16 percent over last year. Total sales to date for 2011 (up to and including the month of May) were 92,068 vehicles. For the same period, second-place Mercedes-Benz sales were 90,274.

That lead of almost 2,000 units is significantly larger than at the end of last month (April). For the first four months of the year, BMW was ahead of Mercedes-Benz by just 29 units.

BMW already leads its premium-brand rivals in yearly global sales but the U.S. market has been the domain of Lexus for more than a decade.

But that is about to change since BMW is pulling ahead as Lexus is plagued by a production slow-down due to the tsunami disaster that struck Japan back in March.

Yes good job to the German premium brands for getting ahead. It just took one of the worst natural disasters in recorded Japan history to do it. Maybe they shouldn't take this lead for granted and try to improve drivetrain quality you know, to make the cars more desirable, for when the Japanese get back on their feet again.

German cars have been more desirable than Japanese cars for a long time, only to people who like to actually drive their cars, not the masses who think Lexus is the "most desirable car". When Consumer Reports says a car is reliable the sheep fall in line and buy, never having an original thought like "do I like the way this car feels, or is there just a bunch of hype behind it?"

Spot on 500. I know so many people buying a car because its reliable before even test driving different cars to see which ones feel alive on the road. For me, I d rather own a spirited enjoyable car even if it needs to go to the mechanic 3 times more than the reliable one over the 5 years I own it.

Have to disagree with PAA and 500. It's not the sheep that fall in line but the practical people that think with their heads. Look at the value you get in a Lexus IS vs BMW 3 series. You get all the toys that are optional in a 3 series coming standard in the IS. I do drive a BMW but there is merit in choosing the Lexus. Not all people use their cars as a drivers tool. Some just want to sit back and relax in comfort. That was what Mercedes-Benz was there for before Lexus came along and took its spot.

Value in Lexus???? I live in Canada and its cheaper to buy a BMW than a lexus. No dealer has a base model IS. If you want to sit back in comfort buy a Cadillac. You can get great deals on those.

I am sure Lexus are good value, but they just seem kinda boring style wise to me. Audi A5/S5 all the way

I'm sure most Lexus buyers would prefer a Benz or BMW in the driveaway if they could afford it. Unless they're Jewish.
