5-door hatchback prototype spied testing in Germany is the upcoming FWD entry-level BMW

This is the money shot set of spy pics - the upcoming 2013/2014 BMW FWD hatch.

This 5-door hatch prototype was spied yesterday by our intrepid spy photographers, along with the next-generation 2013 Mini Cooper with which the new BMW front-drive model will share a platform.

Both prototypes were spotted wearing the same camouflage and the new 5-door hatch prototype seen in the photos here doesn't match anything but a future entry-level BMW front-wheel drive model.

BMW Chairman Norbert Reithofe confirmed the shared FWD platform between MINI and BMW last year, saying in a speech: "For these new vehicles [the new BMW and MINI] we are developing a common architecture for both front and four-wheel drive."

The hatchback seen here certainly is showing the cab-forward design of a front-drive vehicle and it appears to have Golf-class/A3 like proportions. And the Audi A3 will certainly be one of this models main competitors, along with the upcoming Mercedes-Benz A-Class and B-Class, all of which are FWD-based vehicles.

Reminds me of the old A-Class, was not expecting much but this is poor. Especially from BMW that's not the Ultimate Driving Machine even for its class.

THis is really low, which fool has given a green light for this pice of SH@$$t. Put a mini badge on it and I'm fine with it, but Bmw should be ashamed of themselfs, bunch of fools behind their office desks.

This car is designed for the cities, Why do you need a powerful RWD car for driving in traffic...and it will still be preimium quiality vehicle. I actually like the shape of it.

"... the Audi A3 will certainly be one of this models main competitors, along with the upcoming Mercedes-Benz A-Class". Is BMW's rival for the A3 and A-Class not the current 1-Series?

The current 1-Series will grown in size to make room for this new FWD hatch as the entry-level vehicle. So this vehicle will be competing against the likes of the Golf, A3 and Mercedes-Benz's upcoming new A- and B-Class models.

I?d think this could be the series 1 SportsVan that?s said to come with FWD in 2013/14. Should be something like the VW Golf Plus.

What's going on at BMW? Looks like a small MPV for brand tramps... Or put it like this, would I want to be seen in an M3 knowing they also make this?

Crikey, I remember when you aspired to own a BMW, how low can this company go with the cheapening of their brands, firstly Mini and now the main brand BMW..........its getting to the point where badge snobs will absolutely be looking elsewhere and this will do nothing but attract the Rover 45 crowd, oh the irony! LMAO. ........at least the Audi / Merc range is appealing!

It seems someone at BMW HQ has replaced the previous BMW business model with GM's previous business plan. It worked out great for GM didn't it? Oh wait.... it didn't. It's frustrating to watch the fall of a star. This is kind of like watching the Charlie Sheen saga play out but instead of taking mere weeks it's taking years. The light at the end of BMW's tunnel is a freight train. It's gonna be ugly when they meet.
