BMW trademarks M2 moniker for new 2-Series

Current 1-Series will be turned into a 2-Series to make room for a new FWD entry-level 1er

Details on this story have been trickling out for a while but things appear to be getting clearer with each new tidbit.

The basic news is this:

The current BMW 1-Series will be turned into a 2-Series to make room for a new FWD entry-level vehicle that will take up the 1er moniker.

So, that means BMW registering the 'M2' name in both Germany and the United States is intending to make sure they have a name for what will be the successor to the current 1-Series M.

Of course, a patent filing doesn't mean a model is in development, but taken together with previous reports it seems that a future 2-Series will be the continuation of the current 1-Series under a new series number.

Variants will include a 2-Series coupe (allegedly to be called F22), a convertible (F23) and an M2 performance model along with the standard 5-door hatch body-style version.

If it is priced under $30K, it will be the Golf and Audi A3 killer..

There goes my 'ZERO' series theory... @ sam, the current 1 series didn't kill the Golf or A3 so I doubt the 2 series will.

microice is right. the series 1 didnt even pose a problem to golf and A3.. bmws 1 series is kinda like the A-Class, "just to know a merc and a bmw exist in that segment, but nobody is really considering them". (besides, this series 2 isnt a looker) but even A3s and golfs, if u ask me are expesive...almost 30 grand for a small car. mmm :/ i think id go for the leon cupra which is 24 grand (with all optionals i believe) ..Oops, almost forgot. the chassis name, F22... bmw should be careful. thats the name of the american fighter jet F22 Raptor. bmw should prepare for a lawsuit if the americans decide to sue, again, like in the case with the ferrari - F150 name,... :))

I wonder if the 1-series M being only available this year is because it will be reborn as the M2?

the 1-series has been very successful here in Australia - particularly the coupe & the cabriolet. But then again even the "entry" level models are quite expensive so it probably figures they would be. BMW's aim from what I understand with the 1-series was to give people a lower entry point into the brand than the 3-series. I've read other reports that have stated the 1-series will be reserved for the hatches. And the 2-series will become the coupe, cabriolet & M2.
