Nissan envisions a world powered by petrol [video]

Company disses the Chevrolet Volt

Nissan North America has unveiled a new ad campaign that asks "What if everything ran on gas?"

Created to promote the Leaf, the commercial takes a humorous look at the advantages of electricity.  More interestingly, Nissan takes a swipe at the Chevrolet Volt which is a range-extended electric vehicle that uses a petrol engine to extend its 25 to 50 mile (40 to 80 km) range on electricity alone.

Nissan will begin airing 15-second teasers later this week, before debuting the full commercial on June 12th during the NBA Finals.

NISSAN NORTH AMERICA LAUNCHES "NISSAN LEAF: GAS POWERED EVERYTHING" MARKETING CAMPAIGN

Nissan is asking "What if everything ran on gas?" in a series of humorous new spots for the 100% electric Nissan LEAF.

The campaign, called "Gas Powered Everything," was conceived to challenge the notion that cars can only run on gas. By using humor and asking the simple question "What if everything ran on gas?" Nissan is able to rationally make the case that electric cars' time has arrived.

The full 60-second spot will make its world television debut during the NBA's The Finals on June 12. Four more 15-second teasers start appearing next week.

Two of the three Nissan Leafs I've seen have been pulled by tow trucks.

Great ad. Makes you think. My next vehicle will be electric as I do not travel far distances and plug it in at night with my phone. It has been 40 years and we are still buying too many things from the bad guys and they are killing our soldiers with the profits. Just think..no more oil changes, fuel, radiator problems, tune ups...essentially maintenance free

@eddie: try to imagine changing batteries every 2-3 years with enormous recycling costs. Then try to imagine your electricity bill going sky high with little `tune ups` every year by your local energy provider. Lastly try to imagine that the same amount of energy is required to move your car at 100km/h - it's just that you are replacing petrol for electricity to transform it in movement of mass and shape. Think about it!

lithium batteries last longer than the 2-3 yr life span of the nickle batteries in the prius. thats why nissan used toyotas hybrid system instead of making its own, because they were still learning how to cool down the lithium batteries since they get hot. having a 30-60 dollar extra electric bill is better than having to pay 60 bucks each time u go to the pump.... around once a week... which means $240 a month vs like 60 bucks more on ur electric bill

@pzigly: have you checked the European prices on electricity? Do you have any idea what's the cost of rebuilding an entire electrical power transport infrastructure to serve the new demand? It's tens of billions at least! The way of slavery consists in the transition from coal to oil to electron driven society. Add to that your mortgage/rent, and your 60 bucks more wouldn't be enough to drive your "future car.

have you checked the prices of petrol in europe? 60 bucks/40 pounds a week is enough for a short commute in an economical car but you could easily way over that. If you have solar panels on your house, like me, then you make more electricity than you use and therefore fuel costs become less than zero. the only reason i dont have an electric car is the initial asking price.

I live in the US, If i had a house I would go for this car. Just to drive home and back from work and maybe a few errands. My other car would be a sporty 4-5 seater petrol for longer range or weekend car. This car makes sence for Los Angeles drivers who have a house. This car is not for people who need to charge in between destinations, you would get stuck every where. Even if the gov did start adding stations for this car, more people are buying plugin and spots would get full. Also here in the US we have a $10k tax break if you buy this car or the volt. Trust me, you want people buying this car if its appropriate for them. That way demand for oil will go down and you can buy a gas guzzler for fun lol. This car is espically perfect for those ppl who make their own power.

Honestly I see in the not to distant future electricity prices going up making it quite expensive to run, while oil prices come down as demand slows and the oil sheeks try to keep us addicted to oil. Which is better?

Which is better? It's better to have an alternative to gasoline/diesel. And I'm pretty sure that the electric based technology will advance very fast. As long as we have the Sun or the Earth's underground heat there will be unlimited ways to produce electric energy. Compare today gasoline/diesel engines with the XIXth century coal engines and you will probably succeed a little bit to see how the electric future will look like. And this future is closer than you think. Just ask yourself: why oil companies invest today in electric energy?

memexe: So are you saying we are better off with Gas than Electricity? You've got to be kidding me man!!! Like it or not Fossil Fuel is running out. Electric propulsion is the way to move forward. Yes I understand it may not be the most cost effective solution at the time being, but then any new technology will take some time to become cheap. What mankind needs to do is to find ways of harvesting and storing renewable energy economically. I think Hydrogen Fusion reactors are the answer...maybe not now...but definitely in the near future (in 20 years or so).

No, surely no! I'm just saying that the cost of driving your car would be the same, maybe greater.

i have a story! at the end of the day i parked my electric car at my garage with low battery. so i need to charge my car for about 2 to 3 hours. I went into my house and found out my wife in labor and needs to get to the hospital as soon as possible. shoot! I need to wait a few more hours to charge up my car!

same thing could happen if your petrol car was out of fuel :-P Top Gear should show a 10mpg supercar running out of fuel (or more likely catching fire) once in a while to balance things out

true, but at least you can fill up gas for petrol cars in just a few minutes if its readily available. the point is how long does it take to charge up an EV compared to filling up gas on petrol cars.

or, we are going on holiday and the airport is more that 50 miles away! oh we have to hire a car to get there! electric is ok when combined with petrol but the distance resticts you to much to be a first car in my opinion.

Ok...point well taken. But I'm pretty sure that quick charging is coming our way very soon. The industry is already flooded with various quick charging devices...the only problem is that they are quite expensive and not that quick yet. But I'm quite sure that we hould have a quick charging system in place by 2020. A quick jolt of power to our supercapacitors and your ready to go. The Supercaps, will then slowly charge your car while you drive....and yes this would be faster than filling up with gas.

I'm not really pro electric cars. A solution that's is plain as day is this. You do most of your driving during the day. Whynnot install a solar roof panel on top of the cars roof. Blend it in and I'm pretty sure you can charge on the go! And that's just off the top of my head. I'm sure if the genius engineer sits and plays with the idea they can tweak it and make it work some how and there's free electricity for ya.
