Lotus up for sale?
Looking for a new partner
Lotus CEO Dany Bahar has floated the idea of breaking away from Proton.
Speaking at a recent press event, Bahar said that Lotus cannot continue to develop models on their own. Instead, the company needs to form alliance or be sold to a larger automaker like Toyota.
No time frame was given but, in the meantime, Lotus will continue to develop the six models they announced at the Paris Motor Show.

Imagine that, Alfa Romeo and Lotus under one ownership. We'd have VW, Audi, Alfa and Lotus versions of the same 'sporty' car.

If Piech wants it he will get it but i guess his ultimate goal is to buy Alfa.

I think Tony Fernandes should buy it, then instantly fire Dany Bahar. The man has publically admitted that he doesn't care about Colin Chapman's ethos of speed through lightness, which has not only enraged the brands fans, but proves he hasn't got a clue about running a sports car company.
If you can't afford to develop 6 cars, don't develop 6 cars. Its as simple as that.

Saying they have 6 cars in the pipeline peaks interest from potential buyers if, actually WHEN, they decide to sell. They'll assume Lotus is as healthy as ever and is on the verge of becoming a profitable company for once.
It's all bullsh*t of course, they've probably spent their last pennies on designing those concept models.

Yep, agreed! I've always maintained that Lotus needs bread-and-butter model that sells for under 20grand...
But there appears to be a lack of business sense which got Lotus in the financial position they are now. Great engineers do not necessarily make great businessmen!

Oh I would love to see this happen, but sadly it's unlikely really. I can't imagine a small group of entrepreneurs having enough source of finance to take on a proper car company. I mean, Fernandes' purchase of Caterham is fair enough, as the business is small enough, but for Group Lotus, not men in sheds ?? Shame... It would be great to see that one day Team Lotus would be reunited with Lotus, not by sponsoring other French/Luxembourg cars...

Yep, Toyota sounds like a good buyer, they have cooperated nicely, so taking the relationship to the next level is the natural thing to do for Lotus and Toyota.

Whats this? Is this true?
PROTON just 'arranged' a huge loan of upto GBP 270 Million or RM 1.3 Billion for them to develop these cars and now they want to break away from PROTON...talk about being ungreatful...man...

ungrateful? how about using the brands 'handling by lotus' on really really cheap cars and low quality like proton?
May 31, 2011 9:51 pm
Hanssolo58, I am pretty sure there was an agreement for the GBP 270 million and that it ended or something like that. So their agreement ended before Dany Bahar announced that they are going to break up...

Not sure what the fuss is about. Lotus seems to only be able to sell one model at a time. Unless they call the next car Epilepsy what's coming next will just push Evora out of the picture.

lotus was not getting anywhere with proton, while proton was even having sales problems in their own country which offer tax reduction incentive for local brands.

IMO Toyota and Lotus would probably make a good match. There is a lot of expertise Lotus can offer Toyota. But there is also the risk of Toyota taking that expertise then dumping the company, as a few German companies have done???
June 1, 2011 1:22 am
It appears that this is a German thing, remember the Daimler-Chrysler tie up? They used all the good Chrysler assets and then got rid of them, knowing that they will face bankruptcy, even the admired SLS supposed to be the new Viper. Toyota on the other hand is Japanese, and as we all know, the Japanese actually have honor, even if the samurais are long gone.

''It appears that this is a German thing, remember the Daimler-Chrysler tie up? They used all the good Chrysler assets and then got rid of them''
I would agree if you had said BMW/Rover, but it was Chrysler that nearly sucked the life blood out of Daimler, NOT the other way round!
Before the tie-up Mercs were solid, dependable vehicles, during the marriage, MB hit an all time low, one that they are still recovering from.

If the deal with Toyota does go ahead...
How about this; a rebadged Exige as the next, true follow up to the MR2! :)

Toyota is a good match...but what does Lotus have to offer that Toyota doesn't already have?
Toyota already knows how to make sports cars (although they got carried away with making bog fat SUV's in S,M,L,XL sizes) and have extensive motorsports experience.
Hyundai would actually benefit alot more from purchasing Lotus as they are trying to crack into becoming a respectable auto manufacturer...getting the extensive sports car chasis expertise from Lotus would help improve one of their biggest weak points.
Lotus would benefit from cash infusion and Hyundai has more extensive sales channels in the US (critical point that Proton did not have) and in Europe that can be "coerced" into expanding into upper market (Stand alone dealerships for Genesis & Equus Sedans + Lotus Cars)
All of the above can be ofcourse said for Toyota as well...but Hyundai would need it more than they do.
BTW Hyundai have worked with Lotus before for suspension tuning on their coupes...so they have worked together before.

your idea about Lotus & Hyundai offers alot of synergy and would be a good fit. Personally I would like to see Daimler/MB get them. They could develop & share platforms for the C class, SLK, SL and AMG products. AMG has the power and Lotus can tune the handling and help to devise lighter platforms.

isnt lotus already owned by a "big" car company... Proton? what happened..?
June 1, 2011 12:00 pm
I love Lotus but all their new models look like Lamborgini rejects . Whatever happened to their lightweight cars ? All the new models are overweight . I wanted lightweight with tons of power so I guess I'll buy a Pontiac Solstic and put an LS9 under the hood instead of buying a new Lotus .
