Plugging into the future

In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Tesla announced plans to end Roadster production in December.

While this is a tad peculiar, since the Model S won't be launched until mid-2012, Tesla is confident that they can survive on selling the remaining inventory of Roadsters during their year and a half long production hiatus.

The filing also revealed the company will introduce a Model X concept later this year. Details are limited, but the crossover will "incorporate the functionality of a minivan with the consumer appeal of a sports-utility vehicle." If everything goes according to plan, Tesla will launch a production Model X in 2014.

Who is running this company? First they sue Top Gear for a bad review from three years ago, only to announce they are ending production anyway, and they expect to survive for a year and a half without building anything? Wow.

They are making one of the most logical and well thought through decisions that I have seen a car company make in a long time. Instead of keeping up production on a car that was already heading to the end of its cycle and over producing so they have parking lots full of these things with not enough people to buy them, they are producing an estimated number that should meet demand. Unlike GM and Chrysler who didn't do this for two decades with lots full of cars that nobody was going to ever going to buy and having to sell a two year old model after it has ended its run, who we all know are a great success story and will never face bankruptcy proceedings... oh wait... they did. Produce a car and keep up with current demand, finish it when its time has come and put out another desirable car to keep the consumer's attention, that is how you succeed.

What, that doesn't make any sense, did you read the article? They are going to stop productin of the Tesla Roadster, so they can start production of the Tesla S and eventually proceed to the X project. It was always their plan to produce one car at a time, as they know they can't compete yet with the larger companies and their production runs. Model X was never axed and revived, the Tesla Roadster is at the end of its production run!

WRONG! Tesla is not giving the Roadster the axe. Tesla had planned to end production of the Roadster by the end of 2011. They have acknowledged the fact that there will be gap in production as the Roadster comes to an end and until Model S production begins. And the Model X has been set to debut as a concept sometime this year.

No offence, but if I remember what I have read from this manufacturer, this article should be named "Tesla continuing as planned" now, there's a headline...

i have driven the roadster and really, for that money, even with the green factor, it is not worth it. i am 10000000x happier with a petrol elise or exige.

tesla now makes money thru technology partnership and some patents on its battery / drivetrain. it's better off without the roadster.

tesla roadster is based on the Lotus Elise, and is built by Lotus in UK and finally assembled in Cali for US customers or In UK itself for the European Customers...and if you guys were well informed, Elise/Exige is going to be stopped...which is the reason why Telsa has announced that they are going to end the production, but it doesn't mean there will never be a roadster or a coupe in the future....
