Jaguar SUV gets detailed - rumors
Jaguar XJ75 Platinum Concept 16.08.2010

Aluminum body, fuel-efficient engines

If you were afraid that the Jaguar SUV would ruin the brand, you can rest at ease as a new report is indicating the model will be lightweight and agile.

Set to be launched in 2015, the crossover will reportedly feature an aluminum body that weighs 200-300 kg (441-661 lbs) less than a conventional steel body. Furthermore, previous reports have indicated the model will ride on an aluminum chassis, so it's easy to see how the Jag could become one of the lightest crossovers on the market.

Under the hood, power will be provided by a variety of fuel-efficient engines. Diesel options will likely include a 190 PS (140 kW / 187 hp) 2.2-liter four-cylinder and a 3.0-liter V6 with 240 PS (177 kW / 237 hp) and 275 PS (202 kW / 271 hp). On the petrol side, we can expect a new 3.7-liter V6 or a 240 PS (177 kW / 237 hp) turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder from the Range Rover Evoque. Regardless of what engine is selected, it should be paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system.

About time too!! As it will probably use the underpinnings from the JLR stable it should at least be fit for purpose if you do need that, as most people do, extra shove to get you out of a muddy field having visited Henley ;) Has worked for Porsche / VW / Audi all coming from the same group and basic block, lets hope it fits snuggly into the offerings from Jaguar and Land Rover / Range Rover.

The idea makes me cringe.

One good thing about TATA is that they experiment and learn a lot from their and other people's mistakes, so they won't be making the same mistakes with JLR that Ford made. Already TATA has turned around JLR into profit making arm...

It all sounds fine...but the devil is in the detail. In this case, the physical detail. Will this be a proper off roader, or will it just be a jumped up saloon car riding on an all wheel drive platform? I guess only time will tell. TATA for now...!

Personally, I think it should be a "soft roader". Land Rover's already there for the real work, make the jag suv exceptionally plush and completely focused on "on-road" comforts and agility.

I hear the next Discovery will be more rugged and all-terrain vehicle as the 90s Discovery. Jaguar SUV can nicely fill that spot with less weight and better road handling(Discovery is damn too heavy to rival Q7, X5 & next XC90 handling and can't offer similiar fuel efficiency).

Not sure why Jag needs an SUV since Land Rover appeals to the people who may buy a 'Jag' SUV. And what's up with the SUV revolution? It's ok for mass market brands like VW, Audi, Merc, BMW, Toyota but Maserati and Jag...? Gotta pay the bills somehow I guess.

that's a good point, Jaguar people go for Land Rover if they want SUV ...and chances are it's going to benefit no one, the SUV being a jaguar will likely be priced the same as the Range Rover, which is higher than most rivals ...

We are force-nourished with SUV-s for some reason which is probably a result of common hallucination among car industry market-gurus started in US.

Being one company, JLR would benefit from increased sales of any kind. The Crossover would be way more sporty than anything L.Rover has to offer so sales cannibalizing will be minimal. Without the fiscal restraints of FoMoCo, JLR can implement the plan that was layed out so many years ago. These plans we're seeing come to fruition were devised under FoMoCo ownership. Ford just didn't have the money to see them through. Anyway, glad to see the increase use of Ford powerplants in JLR products. (3.7v6, 2.0 I-4 E-boost, 5.0 v8, etc)
