GM working on a small, turbo V8 for next Corvette
2012 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Centennial Edition - 7.4.2011

Next C7 Corvette will feature a more nimble V8 of not much more than 3.0 liters in displacement

GM is promising a very different Chevrolet Corvette for the next-generation of the model.

According to a report by the TheDetroitBureau.com, the next C7 Corvette will be getting a small-displacement turbocharged V8 engine. The new unit will make the model more competitive with European sports cars such as Ferrari and Porsche.

And small displacement means quite tiny for a V8 configuration - a little more than 3.0 liters, according to the report. That sounds a little too small to us, but, that's what GM sources appear to be telling the local publication.

The engine will feature around 400 bhp (298 kW / 406 PS) and its overhead-cam design will make it a more nimble unit for handling.

But GM will be offering other engines in the new C7 Corvette with a more traditional Corvette approach including a big-block V8 with overhead valves.

The next C7 Corvette is due to debut sometime in 2013.

Forget the engine, build it like an Audi and you'd have no problem selling more in Europe.

Long overdue, though I though we might see a 4 litre or 5 litre turbo.

Awesome. Now let's hope they can follow up with good transmissions and suspension.

this article talks of making it more competative with European sports cars as many others before this one has too. The issue has never been the motor or handling with this generation as much as it has been the lack of quality materials in the interior. Many Euro-publications have raved about the Z06's handling and power delivery and how it is on par with the best in its class but all have knocked the seats and cheap feel of the interior. So maybe GM should listen a little more on that front and get some quality leather and plastics for it as well as seats with some bolster support. Just my two cents though!!

Spot on. And since GM's goal is to upgrade its interior to Audi standards lets hope they begin with their best car first because otherwise the Corvette is my dream car.

Nearly every engine made in the past 100 years or so has been an overhead valve design. The opposite being a flathead with the valves located in the block. I assume they ment to say big block overhead cam? Plus (typically speaking) overhead cam engines are heavier by design than a pushrod engine. I will miss the old pushrod engines that's for sure but maybe it's finally time to move on. They deserve a pat on the back for taking the same basic architecture and using it for so many years. small blocks not going anywhere anytime soon. Next generation will be released in a few years. Includes DI and VVT this go around. Should be interesting... And, Im assuming Alex Ricciuti used the old "overhead valve" moniker because of the common OHV/OHC descriptor.

IIRC,,, wasn't it back in the 80's when GM flirted with the idea of a V6 Vette and there was a huge backlash. I guessing the same thing will happen with the idea of a 3L V8. Except this time the Gov.Motors management may not be listening to the customers

Chevy even made a few prototype Wankel powered vettes back in the 70's or 80's I believe. Just an engineering practice I assume.
