BMW M1 under development - report

The rumor that won't die

BMW insider Scott27 is reporting the company is considering a new M1.

While this has been rumored for years, Scott says the car in the early stages of development and only a few sketches have been created. No pictures have surfaced, but the car reportedly adopts styling elements from the i8 and Vision Connected Drive concept.

Performance details are highly speculative, but the car could adopt a carbon fiber chassis and an engine from the next-generation M3 or M5.

If approved, the M1 would likely be launched after 2015 but we aren't getting our hopes up.

I would sacrafice my first born to the German god of automobiles for this thing (well not really, but maybe a goat or cow). This is one beautiful car and hopefully its production version retains something similar in terms of appearance, I would love to buy one when it comes out and I should be at that pay bracket by then.

Er wrong, the current M6 and Alpina B6 allready pulverize the VW R8.It is reality that BMW in every respect remain the masters of Audi,or more accurately stated,a VW with a different bodyshell. Not only on performance , the worldwide sales tell the complete story.Build it BMW, I am a buyer.

And exactly which "VW" platform does the R8 share? The only car it shares anything with is the Gallardo which considering that Lamborghini is a subsidiary of Audi, is totally acceptable. VW may own Audi, but Audi has their own team of engineers namely those at quattro gmbh who are responsible for the development of the R8 and RS cars. Even so, you act as if being owned by VW is a bad thing. VW could buy BMW twice and still have enough to scoop up Alfa Romeo if it wanted to.

You might want to rethink that, the M6 is a GT, which is rather low-class compared to the Bentley Continental GT, bot in terms of image and cachet. And that car uses a Passat platform, so Round 1: Passat 1-0 M6; BMW have no "super" car, so Round 2: Lambo 1-0 BMW; The Alpina B6 does not come close to the R8LMS in GT racing, and is also not a BMW, so round3... And don get me wrong, I like BMW, have some in the family, just hate to see ignorance prevail...

I would prefer the 21st century incarnation of 328 (called new Z8, Z9 or whatever), will deliver good handling, nice interior, not pushing to hard to be one it's not supposed to be (new M5 with almost 600hp is too much and abundance the power) and more friendly for daily drive. M1 will also be difficult to turn profit if history turns around like 80s again (remember energy crisis and sky rocketing petroleum-which also used to create carbon fibre panel)

and ridiculous price too. I like the idea of supercar, but only if the maker is prestigious enough. This M1 can be ahead SLS, but wouldn't be much better than SLS over its rivals, must be at the bottom for performance comparison (only build quality and options are ahead others).

BMW is spending big money on carbon fiber as weight loss improves both mileage and performance.

They should use both new M3 and M5 engine to rival V8 and V10 R8. and also use 760Li's Twin turbo V12 to rival Lambo and 918 etc. This car needs to go under 3 seconds for 0-100 to be a serious competitor in this category, since BMW hasn't done a super car for... too long.

@Davidkhund big mistake to trivialize the R8 in such a way. And this potential M1 is 4-5 years away! R8 will be comepletely thru it's current lifecycle by then. BMW smackdown?!
