Upcoming RX-9 will feature a hybrid set-up to improve fuel-economy and extend the range of the rotary-engined car

According to a report, Mazda is developing an RX-9 coupe that will use a rotary engine (in the RX tradition) coupled to a hybrid drive system supplied by Toyota.

In a Motor Trend story, a Mazda source says the hybrid system will be used as a power boost and range-extender on the RX-9 and not as a usual hybrid system that can run the car on electrical power alone for limited stretches.

Last year, we reported total output expected on the upcoming RX-9 to be around 300 hp (224 kW / 304 PS).

The car will be a two-door coupe model but one which takes much of its styling cues from the Shinari Concept - a four-door coupe. The source also says that the car will share a platform with the next MX-5 and, hence, will be smaller than the previous RX-8.

"Smaller, lighter, cleaner, more fuel-efficient, and more fun to drive. That's where we want to take the next rotary car," says the Mazda employee.

The RX-9 will debut sometime in late 2013.

i used to have a RX-7. other than fuel-comsumption issue, the high rev of the engine is a pure addiction.

why not just make a hydrogen version available instead of this electric/hybrid crap.

RX-8 Hydrogen/Gasoline combo Rotaries have been made and used in Japan and Norway for many years now on a lease basis. The main issue is Hydro Stations and the fact the RENESIS Hydrogen sacrifices half its HP when dashboard button is pressed from Gasoline to Hydrogen.

This is just "speculation"... To make a hybrid the rotary will lose all it weight saving advantages, although will still be lighter... I will believe this one (RX-9) when I see it.. Mazda ARE working on the next rotary BUT emissions and economy IS the issue Mazda's ingenious engineers are grappling with.

saw a FD RX7 on the road the other day, still very gorgeous. If they make the new RX-9 with this design concept, it would be another classic.
