Mercedes is developing a new range-topping model - report
Xenatec Maybach 57S Coupe / Xenatec

Maybach variant also rumored

According to a recent report, Mercedes is developing a new sedan that will rival the Bentley Continental Flying Spur.

Details are limited, but AutoCar says the model will be sold alongside the CL and resemble an "über-CLS." Furthermore, the car is slated to feature dramatic styling, a bespoke suspension and AMG engines.

Besides being offered as a Mercedes, there are rumors that the model could spawn a Maybach variant. Nothing is official, but a source indicated the brand is looking at sportier models because of the interested generated by the Xenatec 57S Cruiserio coupe.

As long as it's design is completely different from a normal Mercedes, it's all good.

@ norther You cannot be serious the A8 is one of the most boring designs I have seen in ages and the XJ is complete rubbish. Nothing comes close to the AMG versions of the S-Class. It will be difficult to go after Bentley, the Maybach was not a good attempt lets hope the next attempt is a lot better.

obviously norther does not own any of them...

I agree with norther. The current S-class is the oldest in its segment and if it were my 100K I'd drop it on an A8 or XJ. Coming from someone who loves Mercedes-Benz...

benz_man, you really think the A8 is comparable to the S Class??? the XJ yes but the A8? the key in this market is originality and distinction the 7 Series , S Class and XJ all compete in this segment without trying to mimic each other or woe each others buyers...the A8 doesn't really have a target market, instead it's trying to win buyers from the 3...

Kid Voltron, the new A8 is (technically) the cleanest design of all current D-segment cars. That was pretty difficult to accomplish this go around with the 7-series looking so bland... Audi buyers are usually interested in classic, more traditional design themes, not trends or fads. And, the A8 interior eclipses everything in the segment by leaps and bounds (as difficult as that may be).

kid voltron, i believe audi has better sales than jag. if it is a case of "stealing" buyers, it is the other way around. (though i would not say such of any serious car manufacturer) and second, like benz man said. audi has a very clean design..and "fresh", and "smart". it is a big sedan that appeals to young drivers too. mercs are ideal for 40+ men. the only thing id buy an S class, it is because they have AMG. pity for audi they dont make a "super" A8, or a super-super A8 (to rival with the s65)

Actually, the observations made by norther and benz_man (i.e. of the A8 having a 'clean' design and so on) are only valid for the previous A8; that indeed was brilliant for its discreet, simple and elegant lines and always admired it for that. However, the new A8 has gained just a few fussy details here and there and IMO looks rather 'blingy' with those headlights and most some wheels. Although tbh I haven't driven any of these so-called luxo-barges, I would probably choose either an XJ or S-Class. Despite being the oldest, the S-Class can still hold its own in quite a few key areas.

make a CL or (new to-be-released) SL based coupe with a Maybach badge and price it around the ?150k mark. it'll sell the Xenatec is a gorgeous thing (far more desirable than the Limousine imho) but at that price? especially with the old school technology. you'd be better off in a CL63 anyway.

A Bentley rivaling Merc is a stupid idea... its a long established institution that Merc competes with BMW, Audi, Jaguar etc. Bentley is in a different league, not necessarily for any tangible reason, but the brand image is much more exclusive. An 'entry' level Maybach is what MB needs to compete with the Flying Spur. They'll need to ditch most MB styling cues though... no one wants to pay double (or more) for a MB lookalike, as evidenced by the Maybach 57/62 abysmal sales.

agreed droid, MB has a bloated marketing research department, but they go against common sense and plan to throw a Maybach into their lineup and expect a double markup. Who is making decisions here the accountants? Or are they afraid their designers can't pull off more than a reworked MB design.

The Mercedes 600 and the 300SEL 6.3 were the absolute top cars of their era. This was when BMW, and Audi in particular, were making good but quite modest 4 cylinder cars.

There's more to just building a car when you are competing in that range. for one, these owners would not want their car to be serviced alongside lowly B or C class, and would want white glove service in delivery and service. That's not happening in your average dealership. Perhaps in some customized AMG / Maybach service centres.

on the other hand I doubt that any Maybach owners do actually visit the service centres, either their drivers do or their cars are collected from them.

The S-Class is THE S-Class. There should NOT be EVER another saloon model wearing the three-pointed star that is above the S-Class. That would be like saying all of a sudden there is someone higher up in the hierarchy in heaven than God. But what this article seems to be wanting to say is that they want to make a "four door coupe" based on the S-Class...so they can charge people more for something wearing a sexier skin...but based on the same mechanicals of the S-Class. What would you call it? CLS is already taken. SLS is already taken. S-Class Coupe? They did call the C-Clas hatchback a coupe...so we already know Mercedes has a very liberal definition of what a coupe is.

Months ago Georg Kacher suggested that this would be one of the many iterations of the forthcoming S Class (222). Now this is supposed to be some type of different line altogether? Dubious marketing sense knocking down the S from the top of the Mercedes heap. Unless Maybach is being rolled back into the Mercedes Brand, and this is the first of the Mercedes Maybachs
