McLaren mulling a Mega Mac to rival Veyron - report
McLaren F1 vs Bugatti 16.4 Veyron.

The new flagship supercar will come with a new 5.0 liter V8 featuring 799 bhp (596 kW / 810 PS) and 799 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque

According to Autocar, British automaker McLaren is developing a new flagship supercar that will rival the Bugatti Veyron.

The news is not surprising, since last year McLaren's executive chairman Ron Dennis called the Veyron a 'piece of junk'. We guess Dennis thinks it won't be too difficult a job to beat that benchmark.

The 'Mega Mac', as it is being referred to, will have a carbon-fiber monocell similar to the MP4-12C. It will be powered by a 5.0 liter V8, developed in partnership with Ricardo, that produces a walloping 799 bhp (596 kW / 810 PS) and 799 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque.

Because of those figures, the car may come to be called the 799.

The new supercar will come with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox from Graziano and do the 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) sprint in just 2.8 seconds.

McLaren sees a production run of around 100 to 150 units annually for a period of 3 to 4 years.

The Mega Mac will cost between £350,000 and £400,000 and is slated to debut in 2014.

just 400k for a top McLaren? then this would be a bargain of a lifetime for a ultra supercars buyers!

won't work, because 810 ps may get u from 0-60 in 2.8sec but it won't be enough power to surpass forces that act on the car after the 200mph barrier, the drag and wind barrier are so strong after 200mph that x number amount of PS translates into x number amounts of velocity.

just remember the F1 hit 243mph top speed off 627hp. even though its was a v12, im sure mclaren knows what they're doing here. Can't wait to see the accidents this thing gets into!

agree with you...it needs more power and it doesn't matter how light it would be...lightness is good from the stand still but after 125mph is just power poweeeer....and if this car does make it 1000hp then again it needs AWD to get a best launch...and then we are there where all were unsuccesful against the Bugatti...it somehow is the most perfect bullet car...it must have AWD, it must have at least 1000hp and it must be "heavy"...for better traction and for better driveability at 200+mph!

I am not sure what all the "it won't work" stuff is about. Are you really questioning whether McLaren, one of the successful F1 teams of modern times, knows how to make a car work? No-one said it would be faster than the Veyron. The article says it will rival it. Given that I'd still rather have a McLaren F1 than a Veyron, I believe that to most enthusiasts it will rival it -- and then some. Those who want to play Top Trumps rather than drive will probably stick with the Veyron.

agreed, give me a McLaren over the Veyron

Ron, why are you building a flagship McLaren to rival the aforementioned 'piece of junk'? If you think so lowly of the Veyron, shouldn't you be aiming way, way higher? McLaren don't build GT cars so the Bugatti shouldn't even be taken into consideration.

veyron probably not as fast as say Zonda R at track, but the turbo is kicking you like nothing else except (could be) concorde take off (as I never get chance to sit there). The McLaren can have some different schemes like other British base specialist carmaker, 400k for base 799hp another 100k or 50k for another 50hp and if they finally end up offer 1000k then it can cost varily from 600k to 800k before the "special edition" kicks in and add another 100k or 200k to break 1m price tag. Anyway, even Ferrari wouldn't even have chance to beat Veyron due to "unforseeable" profit to develop it (VW can spare some Polos, Fabias, or whatever) after both McLaren and Ferrari are mainly making money only from selling supercar and hypercar (welcome world, F1 replacement and Enzo replacement) and not much money left after cost of development.

There, I meant for their car business and not other SBU like research & technology achievement, theme park (for Ferrari) and F1 (for both). If McLaren can produce car at such high value of money, then wouldn't it better if they make FF rival or the rumoured Bugatti 4 seater? It will really sell well even above their entry level MC-12 or 458 if interior is truly gorgeous ala Italian or Tudor (for McLaren) and quality like German

Concorde did not induce much more G than a regular airliner despite the differing flight power and profiles. At least on the six or so times that I flew on it.

Mega Mac... more like a freaking "Big Mac"! McLaren are and always will be plain jealous of Bugatti and its Veyron - world?s fasted production car ever! That F1 beating it was just staged to f**k Bugatti, just like what Top Gear did with Tesla! No wonder why Mercedes-Benz "divorced" McLaren!.. those guys are too greedy and too jealous who make sub-standard cars. Get over it or Veyron SuperSport will eat "Big Macs" for breakfast! Go-Go German Engineering!

But without McLaren, there wouldn't be any of those beautiful SLRs. Yet MB still has no plan to build another SLR to compete with current 599

Thank, but my point is the modern incarnation of SLC for SLR's class for rather more exclusive than current SLS

In a world where there are 100km long arrow straight roads id have the Bugatti any time. Last i checked we dont live in such a world so id spend my cash on Zonda R's and Koenigsegg Agera R's. Cars that have the corners and straights nailed down. Its more fun when u can go round some corners at breakneck speeds.

Then you run into the problem of the other reality, not all roads are race tracks, what is going to limit you taking that corner is going to be the road you are on not whether or not you are in a Zonda R or Veyron. Personally if i wanted the fastest car on the market for road driving it would be hands down the Veyron, i don't want to break my back and have to get out every 30min to stretch and get a massage...Now for a race track day, hands down the Zonda R...And lets face another reality none of us would drive any of these cars to the limit, if i had enough $ to buy any of them 100x over i would be more worried about risking my life for a 10second faster trip to Starbucks. If you got that much $ you got more enjoyable things than racing around, slow things down and enjoy your lavish life.

I like going fast in cars and I am a pilot that likes going fast. Some of the cars are fast enough especially when going over 150mph which I would rather be in a plane than a car. It does not take much of a bump on a road to get you airborne.

The power requited for the veyron would not be the same needed for the McLaren, the veyron creates a HUGE amount of downforce at top speed which means drag, so it needs more power. All mac would have to do to beat it's top speed is reduce the drag/downforce on the car and have a long enough 5th and 6th gear...But it wouldn't be as rock solid at top speed as the veyron because of the lack of downforce.

not an engineer but the veyron supposedly had challenges with cooling the w16 + 4 turbo, so a little overweight. mclaren obviously have ways to give their car a excellent power/weight ratio and as well aerodynamics to top it.

Slower, less grip, cheaper. This should compete whith the likes of Pagani and K?nigsegg.

Many people here are questioning McLaren's capabilities... there racing history speaks for itself most championships of any other manufacturer and more advanced technology than others as well, just take a look at their simulator (little of which they show) and their ability to make changes on the fly when necessary. I have no doubt they will come out with something amazing as they did with the F1 which still holds the record for top speed for a naturally aspirated car, every one else had to use turbo's or superchargers to break that record. Aerodynamics will play a very big role to reduce wind resistance when going over 200 mph.
