Diesel option on the upcoming 2012 S6 and S7 Sportback models likely to be very popular in Europe

According to a report by Car and Driver, Audi will be offering a diesel option on the upcoming 2012 S6 and S7 Sportback models.

Details are nil beyond that, so we have to speculate that the diesel variant will likely have an up-tuned 3.0 liter TDI dialed up to an output mark competitive with the petrol variant. That means less horsepower but more torque for a diesel unit. We're guessing somewhere in the vicinity of 350 PS (257 kW) and over 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque.

On the petrol front we are expecting a new turbocharged 4.0 liter V8 unit, which Audi will share with the Bentley Continental GT, with a power figure north of 435 PS (320 kW / 429 bhp).

The diesel option on those models will likely be popular in Europe but far less so in North America, if Audi even opts to offer it there.

These new clean diesels are awesome. The exhaust does not smell like diesel, the engine does not sound like a pop corn machine and it revs like a gas power car. Long engine life, less maintenance and more torque and fuel economy what is there not to like?

we all know this is not real... if it was the case no petrol cars would be built again

@eddie: What you've said is generally true for the 6 cylinnder diesels. The 4 cylinders are still crude -reletatively speaking. The 3.0TDI in the VW Touareg sounds much like the 2.0TFSI when they are both idling side by side, except the 3.0TDI has 'more sounds'.

More Le mans efforts bearing fruits. Makes me think that RS-Q5 what-have-you may have a V6 diesel if it comes out. But...S6/7 diesel?

@eddie: "Long engine life, less maintenance and more torque and fuel economy" Do you have any references regarding on that? less maintenance? long engine life? I have experienced the other way around..

Here in Europe, we have been running diesels for a long time, and it's well known that we get a longer engine life from diesels. There are a lot of factors making this happen (rpm, heat, lubrication, and so on), but it's proven. I once said I would never buy a diesel, but after driving a Q7 for the first time with a 3.0 diesel, and then comparing to a petrol version, I was sold. The diesel characteristics may not be what every person like, but for me they just made me buy the car. On the fuel economy side, diesel engines are far more efficient (amount of energy extracted per liter of fuel) than petrol engines, as well as there is more energy in diesel. Putting this two things together and figuring out you have more power from less fuel is easy. :) You can read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_efficiency.

Won't Audi have any copyrights problems with the name "S7" ? Or are Saleen in too deep trouble to even care or be able to respond ?

That news actually made be login and just say LOL. The point of having an S6/7 was that it was a petrol power plant...no? Anyway...LOL

No. The point of the S6/7 is power and performance. 257kW? That's power. It'll translate into performance. And if you've ever driven a high-powered diesel car, you'll know that the sheer amount of torque these diesels make, combined with the power makes for an unmatched 'shove in the back'. It's utterly relentless. Don't knock it till you've tried it, buddy.

Yes...I own a Mercedes E420 CDI 314 bhp and 730 NM so you would think that I know what a diesel engine is all about. The point of having a petrol engine is that it has more responsiveness and you know you can push the revs to the limit and still have some more power, although I doubt it that Audi reinvented diesel engines and somehow managed to improve them in theese areas.

If I had an Audi A6/A7 it would be diesel. Audi's don't handle very well beyond the most mundane task of getting you from one point to another.

those S5/S6/S7 will have the new V6 TT diesel (in favour of Le Mans 3,7L V6 TDI)...with numbers that will make it the most powerful V6 diesel in a passenger car! I hope for a 3,7L V6 TDI somewhere near 400hp and 700Nm...in a S5 that would be awesom...somekind of a diesel-powered Nissan GT-R diesel rocket :D

Should be similar to BMW's 3 liter diesel motor.
