VW likely to produce Polo R based on WRC car for 2013 - report

Polo R WRC entry in 2013 makes a road-going Polo R variant a more likely proposition for VW

VW is still wavering on whether or not a Polo R is actually coming but the recent news that a Polo R WRC was headed for a rally debut in 2013 makes the likelihood that Volkswagen will produce a road-going variant far greater.

According to VW board member Ulrich Hackenberg, the coming Polo R WRC boosts a street-legal variant's chances but the model may take some time to make it to market.

"You can see how the World Rally Championship programme would increase the probability of an R version of the base model [Polo]. It is with the rally programme, not before it. I can't give a precise date, but it's along those lines."

That means a market introduction for the Polo R won't happen before 2013.

A Polo R derived from the WRC program would spread development costs around and improve the business case for building the model - the one factor that held VW back for so long.

But a more cost-viable Polo R may not share the same powertrain as the WRC Polo R. That rally racer comes with a 1.6-liter TSI engine with 300 PS (221 kW / 296 hp) and an all-wheel drive system. The road-going Polo R may come with VW Group's 1.4 TSI tuned to above the 200 PS (147 kW / 197 bhp) mark and may not have an all-wheel drive system, like the Golf R does, but instead be a front-drive model like the Scirocco R.

The current Polo GTI comes with a 1.4 TSI with 180 PS (132 kW / 178 hp) 249 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque.

Finally! Its about time someone else did what Subaru and Mitsubishi have been doing for decades. As far as I am concerned Evos and Imprezas are so overrated mostly because they had no competition. I cant remember the last time either of them won a championship or heck when was the last time an Evo even competed. These cars living off a 20 year old reputation. They have gotten their butts kicked for ages right out of the WRC in fact.

They didn't have competition? WTF are you saying? In their heyday the competed against the Celica GT-4, Lancia Delta 16V, Escort Cossie Rs, Focus WRC, Pug 206 WRC, Corolla WRC and the Citroen Xzara amongst others. They aren't overrated because show me another 2 cars that can emabrass a porsche 911 C2 with just a 4 Grand turbo kit. Both the impreza and the EVO won the WRC like 4 times Apiece and they have usable trunks. The reason ppl love these cars so much is because they offer so much for a relatively reasonable price. If you aren't able to recognize that at the least you are not a car enthusiast.

@ Dolomight 74-86, I was talking about no road versions to compete with Evos & Sti. There is no Citroen Xsara Evo or C4 Evo but Citroen has kicked butt for 7 years straight, No Peugeot 206 Evo etc

If your talking about road going models that is basically FIA's fault. In 1998 when the WRC switched from Group A to WRC class they told manufacturers they didn't have to build 2500 Cars to homoligate for the WRC class.

In fact coming to think of it I would not even rank Evos and Sti amongst the best road going rally cars. I would leave the honours to cars like the Lancia Stratos, Audi Sport Quattro, Lancia Delta S4 etc. Truly magnificent cars.

Personally I had a weakness for the Pug 205 t-16 and the Lancia 037. But of all the Group A cars The Evo and Impreza were the top winners.

Like Zot said, it is about time another manufacturer made a road going rally car. It'll probably be a smaller and cheaper alternative to the Evo and WRX STI.

anyone ever driven Evo and WRX? these cars are very successful in international Rallyeseries and so popular as puplic cars. Why when they cost so much? 'cause that are true sportscars without compromises in drivetraintechnique... This streetleagal idea of VW isn't more then a Fabia RS. a potential compact. Good, but not what you can call a rallycar! I remind the Golf MkIII A59 conception. That was a true effort to bring a rallyecar to street...but only an effort. No concern has the money to develop a special drivetrain for a massproduction car only to have a top-model of it

And don't forget the Fiesta ST (or possibly the RS, since the Fiesta now competes in the WRC)

Its about time manufacturers take marketing advantage of the WRC. They keep spending all this money on the sport and yet they don't give buyers production versions of their rally cars.
