Top Gear and an out-of-juice Nissan Leaf [video]

Famed BBC automotive show still having trouble with electric cars

Well, we know that Clarkson and his Top Gear crew are rather skeptical of electric cars and wouldn't be above semi-staging one running out of power.

But this incident seems pretty authentic as the hosts of the BBC program Top Gear, Jerermy Clarkson and James May, try to find an outlet to recharge the electric cars they were testing while in Lincolnshire County.

But there are no proper outlets available for electric cars in the county so the two find their way to the University of Lincoln for an improvised recharging session on the university grounds as a crowd gathered around.

At one point, Clarkson and May and a group of students are seen pushing Clarkson's out-of-power Nissan Leaf. May was driving a Peugeot iOn which also had to be recharged.

So, they took an electric car to a place that they knew wasn't prepared for the use of electric cars and this is supposed to be a legitimate demonstration of the vehicle? Let me take a Lamborghini, any model to the Sahara and lets see how far I can make it before I can't find a gas station. Even better, take an early model car and drive it around the central US in the 1900's, lets see how far you can get... oh wait they didn't have a proper infastructure setup yet for these dang fangled horseless carraiges. Everything is highly subjective, these cars are designed for places with the proper infastructure.

I agree with at some part.but the problem is,when these cars came to sale, there was an agreement by the goverment that there would exist infrastructures ready for these types of cars by the time they would come to market, and they simply don't exist. So, in this case, maybe it's not (only) a critic to the electric cars range, but the way that this process of introduction to the market was treated by the brands and local goverments, because in other countries, the same is happening. Now, these cars main purpose are the cities? well, i think yes, but the brands should clearly anounce that to the consumer. I personally think that this whole electric car introduction was rushed to quickly so that the european union and some hippies, like jeremy would say, would be happy for a while.these cars either should have a bigger range or a really fast charging time, so that they could really be an alternative to the internal combustion engine.

so if you have a stupid electric car, you can't go to Lincolnshire?

it's not necessarily even about where they can or cannot go to, this is a common problem even amongst ordinary cars I don't know why they are making such a fuss...there places or towns everywhere in each sizeable country where there won't be any types of fuel available, I'm quiet sure there is a Fuel gauge in the car which they intentionally overlooked...this is staged, they are giving Nissan a bad PR on purpose...

Uh oh they're at it again, trashing electric cars just because they don't like them. I don't like muscle cars but I'd never go out of my way to trash them, it would be disrespectful to the car enthusiasts that love muscle cars.

I don't see why people should be offended by what is said on the show. Top Gear is an entertainemt show, not a factual programme. I love TG, but I wouldn't take much advice from it.

@N20_Purge, there are allot of people out there that don't separate fact from fiction when it comes to watching their favorite shows. And although Top Gear is an entertainment only show, they do present it as a review show.

there is a reason behind disliking electric cars. the reasons are: impracticality, lack of speed/power/sound/feel, necessity to charge, lack of long range drive0-ability, unreliability(electrical issues), and the fact that the electricity comes from power factories which burn oil in one way or another with very little efficiency to produce power or usage of nuclear power which is very costly, hazardous(radioactive byproducts/trash) and it actually requires alot of oil to run a power factory either directly or in directly. to add to all this batteries that are used in electric vehicles go through alot of processing and use a lot of oil and money to be produced. I hope you can come up with a good reason to dislike a piece of history (muscle cars) while you are defending the doomed future which if followed would most likely would result directly in forcing the mass of population to use public transportation while paying an unreasonably high cost.

@shaahinmt, you obviously no nothing about EVs. And from your comment I can tell that you also know nothing about gasoline. So why even bother commenting? Try reading a bit more and then come back with some educated comments.

TG is the best TV show in the world. if you don't like what they are doing, why bother watching it? go watch 5th gear instead. it may look like they are trashing electric cars again, but i think they are demonstrating the real problem of those electric cars. all it can do is drive to work and home. you can never drive it to anywhere else!! how stupid is that! i rather have a Hyundai and go any where whenever i want to.

So they know about cars better than the judges who voted the Leaf, Car of the Year? Good show to watch for the silly comments and the unusually way they test cars etc. but nothing more.

Electricity is amazing thing and thats why never actually left his academic or scientific environment but most experiments are stupid though.

Perhaps all electric cars should come with the option of a built in charger to remove range anxiety...? (as in the Audi A1 e-tron with a rotary-engine charger which isn't an option BTW) http://www.autocar.co.uk/CarReviews/FirstDrives/Audi-A1-12-kWh-e-tron/254073/

My anoyance with tg is the series is now half as long and is script like tbat seventies show, however in this case they do highlight the fact the infrastructure isnt there.i live in newcastle uk not far from the sunderland plant that makes these for europe (well after japan sorts it self out after the earth quake where the batteries are made) and we have 1 charging point for 150 test drivers as part of a government.initiative.......and its in the middle of the busiest street on a fri n sat night....where u dont want to leave a car, i completely agree with tg stance on this issue. I renault clio 1.5 dci is way less polluting than any hybrid or electric car due to material transport before hitting the road, all u hybrid drivers need to take that smug look of ur face all ur doing is redistributing ur smog

The argument that a hybrid or electric car only redistributes it's pollution is an argument highlighting the point of these vehicles :D Moving pollution out of the city or urban environment while maintaining independent forms of transportation in those areas is a win in my books. As for the charging points, I'll take one at home thanks and plan my travel arrangements around the range of my vehicle. If my daily trip is greater than the range of an electric car I'd be stupid to buy an electric car. My daily travel distance include 2 30km trips that are about 8 hours apart on average. Even without charging the car at work I could get by with a Leaf. I think an important rule for potential electric car buyers would be if you are not intelligent enough to determine your own transportation needs then you shouldn't buy an electric car. Perhaps rather take public transport as you are probably not intelligent enough to drive safely on public roads.

i love top gear but JC is just an old man who cannot adjust to new technology but you cannot really hide the fact of the problem on electric cars running out of power. it really is annoying and this was a problem before they started inventing electric cars. I hate electric cars and I rather get a diesel car than this. Anyway, EV cars is just a temporary alternative car. If F-cell will be in production soon these cars will die!

Sorry Leaf, this is the reason I won't consider the likes of you for my next car. The most I would go would be a Prius or even better, the Volt/Ampera technology.

The answer is Opel Ampera (Chevy Volt) for sure. I would not be interested in a pure EV car, at least not within the next 5 years. And sorry but, I would not wanna buy a pure EV car just to go to work either, what if I wanna take several days off for a short trip ? Shall I keep another car ?

I watch TG for purely entertainment and would never buy a car based on their comments about it. Clarkson is just making himself look like a complete moron since the Leaf give ample worning when it will run out of power and how much further you have to go before it does, this is just a meaningless episode strictly showing their dislike of electric cars
