Q5 RS prototype is sporting modifications typical of an RS variant - under the hood we suspect a dialed-up 3.0 liter TFSI

Here are a few spy shots of a suspected Audi Q5 RS prototype.

The vehicle spotted here is badged with a TDI Quattro emblem but it is sporting a quad-exhaust which is never fitted with a diesel engine. And the rear bumper appears to have been modified to fit those four pipes. The aluminum rims are typical RS test wheels and the front fenders could be a little wider too.

This Q5 RS prototype is also wearing plates from Heilbronn where Audi's RS unit's R&D facility is located.

What could be under the hood here, we really don't know. But in 2009, Audi presented a Q5 Custom Concept at the Wörthersee Tour in Austria that featured a 3.0 TFSI V6 delivering 408 PS (300 kW) and 500 Nm of torque and was taken to be a preview to what a future Q5 RS variant would look like.

This is an interesting discussion actually. I've been wondering what the point of the 'S' models are since there's more emphasis on RS versions now. This Q5 RS is a little too predictable and pointless in equal measure (especially without the 'S' variant preceding it). Reactive rather than proactive seems to be the norm at Audi recently.

My $$$'s on an S variant. RS version doesn't make sense IMO. Quad tips suggest S, not RS, and there really aren't any other clues (no silver mirrors, etc.)

Come one WCF seriously? Quad tips = 'S' When's the last time Audi made an 'RS' without an 'S' coming before it.

They have more than one RS at the moment so I think thats changed. I agree that I don't really see the purpose here either but maybe they're wanting to compete with the Cayenne and new Jeep SRT8.

Really?? I can't see the appeal of this, considering Audi only make one RS model at a time ( - is this still the case now??) I'd say all that will do is deprive us of a proper RS model for however long it is in production for.

I don't think that's their policy anymore, aren't they currently producing thE RS3, RS5 and still the old RS6 avant?

The RS6 has stopped production, as has the TT-RS I think - only very few of them coming through that are already built, the RS3 has been unveiled but didn't think it has been fully released for deliveries yet which leaves the RS5? It's a shame because the RS-models are amazing, I just can't see the point in this one, there's supposed to be an RS7 coming too - I'd rather see that brought forward than have a Q5 RS around.
