Mercedes A-Class revealed in patent filing

Sportier styling, premium interior

Our friends at the European Patent Office have leaked the first pictures of the 2012 Mercedes A-Class.

Previewed by the A-Class concept, the production model is a five-door hatchback with subdued styling. The overall design seems to mimic the BMW 1-Series, but the front end is distinguished by a long hood, LED-infused headlights and a two-bar grille.

No interior pictures were released, but Mercedes has indicated the car will have a luxurious cabin with a high-tech COMAND system that offers downloadable apps.

As we have previously reported, the A-Class will ride on the MFA platform and feature a variety of fuel efficient engines. Nothing is official, but the range-topping A25 AMG is expected to have a turbocharged 2.0-liter petrol that develops 320 hp (239 kW / 324 PS) to 350 hp (261 kW / 355 PS).

I hate be a party pooper, but? ?this is not the new A-Class. It is a very good photoshop attempt to suggest what it will be like. Several ?mistakes? give the game away: 1. The rear lights are wrong. The new CLS previews a new look and feel for rear light design which the A-Class concept also incorporated when it was revealed at the Shanghai Show. These lights have nothing in common with any existing or planned future light styling ? they?re simply a figment of someone?s imagination. 2. The front and rear door treatment has been lifted from the existing C-Class design. The entire shape of the mid-section resembles the current C-Class so closely it can only be the source of the 'design'. There is also an awkward kink in the rear window that looks as if it has been reshaped to fit the body. MB designers would never copy an existing design so shamelessly and if they did they'd do a better job than this 3. The front end and cabin details look as if they are two separate designs that have been joined together. This is often a photoshop giveaway. The engine compartment is too long relative to the passenger compartment. 4. Gorden Wagener (Mercedes-Benz Head of Design) said that the A-Class Concept shown in Shanghai was very close to the production version. The only things that were due to change were the number of doors, depth of the window frames, the front head lights and the grille. Crucially, he said the overall proportions would stay the same. This seems too different and ugly to be the production version. So, nice try, but no cigar.

Change the badge and add shoulder, got you a new C30. The concept looks way more exciting as well as premium, this one is simply not. The back then remind me of DS3 and far unrelated to other MB line up. But with that a hell 320hp engine, should be a promising hot hatch.

To be honest lexus CT looks nicer especially from back and have better rear vision than this new a-class (look at that small rear windscreen, nice but make rear view camera is a must)

It's miles better than the current A-Class. It's funny how all the Premium hatchbacks are all getting updated at the same time.

it?s better agreed, but i would still take a Golf GTI over this.

Uh oh someone at the patent office will be getting fired! I don't think its fair to judge it from these pictures, its a crappy image of an unfinished model. However, saying that i think it looks really good

They stole the patent design from Citroen DS3 and Toyota Auris. The side profile of the car looks hideous, the nose is too heavy, with the front engine front wheel drive set up. I have to say the Peugeot 308 looks a lot better proportioned than this or an Opel Astra. The concept car looks a lot better than this! The Alfa Giuletta is the prettiest, most elegant and sexiest yet.

The headlights look very Volvo S60-ish to me. Apart from that, I think it looks quite good, though not as good as the concept. The problem is, as some have pointed out, that it doesn't really match with the rest of the M-B lineup, however it could be the first car introducing a new styling language for Merc, wait and see.

Can't wait to see the 3 door version. I hope it will look more like the concept.

Somehow I don't think that the production version will look like this: there are quite a few details which IMO are not in line with Merc design, and too many that are borrowed from other cars (increasing suspicion that this picture is fake). Of course, they may be introducing a new design direction...but somehow I think that this quite unlikely and that this picture does not represent the actual production model. I guess time will tell.

this is my first comment on wcf - never really felt anything which i really have to let it out BUT THIS IS SOMETHING ELSE how can a concept look so nice and the production model look so...bland i am a hardcore merc fan and i have to go through the trouble of registration and say that i am very disappointed. its like the made a rocket science concept and give u a lupo with better stickers :( i hope that the final model is (a lot) better than this

welcome, same with the F800 concept which was presented as a sneak peak at the new CLS and was much more interesting.

Actually, I was under the impression that the F800 previewed a C-Class sized 'four-door coupe', not the E-Class based 'four-door coupe' CLS.

Guys, its obvious. This is fake. The Back is a stretched VW Polo view, the side is Opel and the front B-Class.

sigh, another promising Mercedes concept butchered in production form. Is it just me, or is Merc seriously lacking in execution lately? Their design team clearly has some great ideas, but this is just disappointing.

Looks good. More "Golf" than the last A-Class IMO.

I think the problem might be, that no one whould think, it's a Mercedes. Without the star it can be everything. Thats my opinion about this back

Never really liked the concept, it looked too over designed but this doesnt look like a Benz at all, main pic looks too much like the 1series hatch

At one time Mercedes built cars of timeless elegance. I now wonder whether they are trying to see how far they can go and still sell cars. It's really quite a testimony to their popularity. I thought the Ponton hips on the E class were bad; this and the CLS are clearly not for me. Hopefully they won't make the upcoming SL into some sort of oragami charicature.

Ummm. I don't think this is the final car. MB already mentioned the final car will look very close to the concept they showed.

oh yeh when i read that press i felt positive too. but thinking about it again that design bloke said something like "yeh well, it will be the same. only changes to the lights, front grill and bumpers will be made" they screwed up a really nice car by changing only three things.

I gave the old A-class. Lot of interior space - little exterior size . This new one is just a car made by MB versus 1 series and A3 . Too bad MB ! I was thinking I would buy the new A-class , but not with this shape .
