2012 Ferrari 599 successor comes into focus [video]

Will reportedly remain rear-wheel drive

The Ferrari 599 successor isn't due until late 2012, but new details are starting to emerge about the highly-anticipated supercar.

Reportedly derived from the FF, the flagship model will ride on an aluminum chassis that has a multi-link rear suspension which should improve ride quality. Furthermore, the mysterious model will reportedly adopt composite body panels to reduce weight.

Under the hood, motivation will likely be provided by a 6.3-liter V12 engine that produces 700 hp (522 kW / 710 PS). It will be connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission which will send power to the rear-wheels through an electronically locking rear differential. As for previous rumors of all-wheel drive? Motor Trend says "certainly not."

700bhp is a little much. This thing would be fun on the highway but will probably be a little too porky for a twisty mountain road w\ that v-12.

If it isn't an V12 MR (or V8 for their smaller brothers), it is not a real Ferrari according to the classic definition established under Enzo. Sadly, this means that there hasn't been a real Ferrari produced in many years, with the exception of the eights.

Far from it, in fact it has been proven that a car recieves a drastic increase in performance from having the engine placed in an MR position, which is difficult to claim in relation to most Ferraris. A luddite would opt for a conventional FR settup, as that is the original and standard way for producing a car. Diablo, NSX, R8, Testarossa, F1 and so on are just a few examples of how such a configuration can have a drastic influence on the car.
