 Subaru Tribeca & Mazda6 axed - report
Subaru Tribeca

Slow sales cited as the primary reason

Japan's Nikkan Kogyo is reporting that Subaru has stopped development of the next-generation Tribeca and will soon end production of the current model.

Likewise, the newspaper says Mazda has decided to cease production of the unpopular Mazda6.

While this is sad news, if it turns out to be correct, it's not terribly surprising. Subaru has only sold 910 Tribecas since the start of the year and Mazda6 sales have been far below original estimates.

Bummer for Mazda. The 6's interior and drive response is far better than the competition.

interior far better than... what?! passat, C5, laguna, 508, insignia, 159, accord? You must be joking. Ok, maybe a bit better than avensis or legacy. IMO interior is the weakest point of 6. btw: I agree - it's really fun to drive

no one has heard of any of these cars out side of western Europe while Mazda 6 is sold all over the world.

Never liked the Tribeca but I really liked the Mazda 6, it was one of the few Japanese cars that I liked. Maybe the loss of the Mazda 6 is just another example of what Nissan and VW have learned. People want boring cars and the 6 was not boring enough in its class. Mazda should make Corolla clones now in small medium & large.

I don't mean this to sound angry, but the very reason General Motors was doing very badly a few years ago was because their cars were TOO boring. That's got nothing to do with it. The reason people buy Toyotas and VWs and Nissans is that they build highly regarded quality products. Of course people don't actively seek out boring cars. The people that don't care about driving feel/style/etc. just want something that will work for a very long time and hold onto its value. Maybe the Mazda6 was flawed. Maybe it just couldn't stand up against the Ford Mondeo, VW Passat and BMW 3-Series. Maybe the image just isn't there. I don't know. But I can be fairly certain that being "too exciting" is not why this car's days are numbered. P.S. I never liked the Tribeca either tbh. In fact there are so few of them around I forgot it even existed!

What you and Mikeado say might be true for Europe, but it is a different story in North America. VW does not have a better reputation in the USA then Mazda. In fact, close to 50,000 Mazda6 were sold in the US last year which is 5 times more then the Passat. And no Ford Mondeo here... only a Ford Fusion which is based on the Mazda6. What this article fails to mention is that Subaru and Mazda are rumored to cut production in the US. The Tribeca because it doesn't sell, and in the case of the Mazda6 because the US plant where it is made is a joint-venture with Ford... with whom Mazda is trying to get out of. The Mazda6 is not meeting sale expectation of 100,000 units a year, but it can still be profitable if production is more efficient.

It's a big shame really because the Mazda 6 is a really good car. Probably a car of that size suits the taste of Americans more than Europeans do. I guess they should have built two different models of Mazda 6s like Honda did with the Accord to suit different tastes. Hope they come up with a successor soon !!

@Douglas6250: They did build two different versions. Frankly, I think that was their mistake. They should have gave us the same one as the rest of the world, like they did for the first model. The "rest of the world" version is also a much better car in my opinion.

I guess this makes room for the production version of Mazda Shinari concept Subaru differentiate too little between models, the one mentioned here, Outback, Forester, and Legacy wagon all similar in some way

I call it bullshit, the 6 is really important for Mazda.

I see 15 times more Civics and Tercels/Echos. That`s a big success! Even that I`d push them out of the road every time I get the occasion! Mazda 6 was the best styled Japanese car in Nord America. Look at that ugly Crosstour for comparison....

Japanese Styled says it all, cuz that's all that is Japanese about it, just like the Iphone is styled in California, then everything else is built in Korea by Samsung and assembled in China.

Mazda 6 has been a massive sales success over here in Australia over the years and has even won car of the year. I doubt it will be axed, perhaps, rather given a new life with a makeover.

I agree, it would be considered far too important for Mazda to axe it here.

The Tribecca has been a dog from the word go with it's odd styling, poor packaging and average performance. Good riddance!

I don't see the Mazda 6 as a compeitor to the Civic or Corolla. It competes against the Accord, Camry, and Altima. It's a very competitive segment.

I've always admire the Mazda6 more than Camrys, Accords and other of its rival. Mazda6 sports wagon is the best looking station wagon in its class. Was hoping to get the station wagon unit imported from Japan or U.K.

Reading the source article, it sounds like only the US version of the Mazda 6 is being axed... Maybe they're planning to bring over the 'world' version like they should have in the first place. I've always thought the new US version was too big and had an awkward front end.

Looks like it's only the US Mazda6 getting axed...They'd be fools to axe the Euro-spec model, it's seen as one of the leaders in its class!

My buddy bought himself a 6 and it's an ok car. But the tribeca is a POS. Kill it with fire!!!

The 6 is an overpriced Ford, nobody in their right mind would pay japanese car prices for a Ford. It's also a bitch car, not manly enough looking for a car that big. I would say in general Mazda's are women's cars, and as women start taking over the economy and earning more $ they don't have to settle for ghetto rebadged fords, they can afford real cars like Audi, Mercedes, BMW, or real japanese cars like Acuras,Lexus and Infinity. The 6 has lost it's market.

I wanted them to kill the Tribeca it looks like a pig. Shame about the 6 though, it was a nice car but why buy the 6 when you could buy the Mondeo which is the basically the same car for cheaper and with the T5 engine.

The Tribeca I can understand, but the 6? A bit harsh even though I understand Mazda need to start thinking bigger; Ford just released a Focus with Active Park Assist which is Lexus territory!

LOL. It took them some time to figure this sh*t out!?! That's a big bummer. I have never like the 6 either the previous or the current generation. I have given a chance for Mazda to make the 6 what it should look like, but Mazda has really failed me in the regular car department, except Mazda3/Axela. It doesn't matter if it is either Mazda5, CX-7 or CX-9. Like one of you mentioned it, the Mazda6 is not "man" enough to be what it want to be. The front still look like a revamped old generation Mazda3. Not much chrome or anything, maybe some political deal with Ford BS. I wanted a Mazda5, but the 4+2 config is a bummer. The new 2012 rear style has gone a bit better. But besides that, Ford get to get 7 seat configuration. Political BS sh*t again. The CX-7 is too much of a gas guzzler. And the interior quality is well below standard compared to a Mazda3 because of the interior size. Craftmanship design cannot be the same in big and small size. It's not like a T-shirt. CX-9 might be one of the best handler in its class, but price hits the luxo area. Might as well get a Subaru instead. The RX-8 was pretty much a joke. The Mazdaspeed3 is just more practical. And let's just hope that if an RX-7 (or RX-9: I say whatever) comes out, it won't be the same sh*t. Now, I am anticipating big in the CX-5. But after seeing how WELL Mazda has been doing lately. I cannot really bet much on it. Might as well axe it, and go for a Porsche Cajun, an Audi Q3, or wait for Subaru to bring a hybrid Impreza instead.

I am bit surprised with Mazda6 news. My brother has one and I have seen a lot on the roads, well at least here in New England.

People! The US spec 6 is not the same as the European model and its only the American 6 thats getting the boot. The previous 6 was a great car, it looked the part (zoom zoom) and it thumbed its nose at the Accord/Camry/Altima clones. The current model with its bloated boring looks are too close to the aforementioned. If Mazda wants to sell the 6 then it has to go back to the zoom zoom and not worry about the other bloated boring pigs in the segment.
